All Is As It Should Be ~ G. Michael Vasey

Reblogged from the Magical World of G. Michael Vasey:

Today it is gloomy, very misty, cold with a slight drizzle. It has been this way more or less since I started working with Morana, Goddess of winter. The weather forecast shows this sort of weather – colder and snowy even going on for at least another week. I am tempted to believe that it is related to my activities as usually the weather is bright and sunny on most days in December here.

Discovering Albion – day 8: Synchronicity

55We needed a walk after breakfast. We’d made a start on the fruit and cereals… and there was toast. We may not have bothered had we realised that the plates soon to be delivered would feed the pair of us for a week. We certainly wouldn’t need lunch…Two or even three of everything; all the usual suspects like eggs, bacon grilled tomatoes and sausages… but also potato scone, black pudding and haggis. The Old Aberlady Inn did us proud. We really needed a walk!

scotland trip jan 15 163So off we went in search of the 18th century ‘Mercat Cross’ I had seen marked on the board the night before. We hadn’t far to walk… which was probably just as well… before we found it on the main street. We must have passed it in the dark last night. A thrush… a mistle thrush I think… looked down on our activities from an overhanging branch as we walked beyond the worn stones. We had spotted something else.

scotland trip jan 15 014I’d seen something marked called the ‘loupin on stane’. The last word, I had understood, but it wasn’t until I saw the mounting block outside the church that the penny dropped and I understood the rest. Loupin-leaping-loping… stone steps to help those who needed it onto their horses after church. Of course!

scotland trip jan 15 020We wandered into the graveyard, looking at the tombs. It was far too early to expect the kirk to be open, even in summer. In January we had no chance. There were a good many stones from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as the burials of the Earl of Wemyss and his family and a rather curious and weatherworn carving that caught my eye. Probably because of the twin theme again, even though this was only a few hundred years old.

Ars Geometrica: Atalanta…

2‘The Flight of Atalanta’ by Michael Maier…

*

…The ‘Sixteenth’ and ‘Seventeenth’ Leaves.

*

‘…From a man and a woman make a circle…’

‘…And then a square…’

*

We thought again of The Officers Of Law who appeared to see the girl as a man?

‘The Spirit as Inner Fire is ‘Agni’ for the Vedic and ‘Hermes’ for the Greek.

The vessel defines the content which is a perception.

Make the vessel transparent in order to ‘see’ clearly.’

Clearly, this sequence of directions related to a famous alchemical engraving. We dashed to our library…

Feeling True…

kites 127

…Her hand crept to the feather at her throat.

Her gift from the gods.

The colour of flame.

She had strayed from the path.

Seeking silence.

Preparing herself for what was to come.

The great bird had wheeled overhead.

Soaring above the trees in the morning.

She had looked down and seen rainbows caught in the feather, bright against the grass and smiled…

The Small Dog on the Common Cold (or why there are sausage rolls under the sofa cushions…)

She’s got a really rotten cold

And isn’t feeling well,

She’s curled up on the sofa

And she looks as rough as hell.

The good thing is it’s ‘feed a cold’

As far as I can tell,

Which means, of course, she really must

Keep feeding me as well

Kilneuair Chapel ~ Jo Woolf

Reblogged from The Hazel Tree:

Writing in ‘The Kist’ in 1994, the historian Lady McGrigor said:

“The old church of Kilneuair (Cill an Iubhair, Chapel of the Yews), once important in the district as the parish church of Glassary, is now quite difficult to find.”

She wasn’t kidding. Twenty-six years later, with forest plantations growing up all around it, it’s even harder to find, and the task isn’t made any easier if you start off on the wrong track and end up following deer paths (that’s what I was assured they were) through stands of conifers so densely planted that you have to push through them backwards in order to protect your eyes.

Added to which, I’d chosen to wear wellies but the thick frost proved extremely slippery on near-vertical slopes. A lot of clambering took place, and some mildly colourful expressions of surprise at the gradient.

Discovering Albion – day 7: The Water of Leith

scotland trip jan 15 574We left Montrose after no more than the visit to the pub. We may regret that, of course, having been led there pretty much by accident, but we were not aware of any particular reason for being there … other than the pub… time was getting on and the church looked closed for the day. And anyway, we were both disappointed at not making it as far as Boddam after all… and dinner was a long drive away. Nor had we any idea where we might be going to stay that night. We would see where we ended up.

scotland trip jan 15 580The snow ceased and the hawks returned almost as soon as we left Montrose, so we were pretty sure we had made the right choice. Taking the coast road for a while through Arbroath to Dundee the sky softened to pastel and dinner or not, we had to stop. Just so I could take the odd picture of the changing light…

scotland trip jan 15 561We crossed the Tay for the second time that afternoon then slipped, just for once, onto a slightly faster road and headed south towards Edinburgh. Both Stuart and I have friends in Leith, a district of the city that sits on the southern bank of the Forth of Firth so we decided to head that way in search of somewhere to eat… and left a message to see if one of our friends was free to join us.

scotland trip jan 15 586Of course, we had to find the Quays first… the bit my companion remembered where he knew we would also find dinner. This proved a little problematic, but after all, you can only go so far when one part of the town meets the water. Finding the place we needed, we set off to walk beside the Water of Leith where the old port buildings and pubs have been given a facelift.

Kraas…

*

Dark night, utterly dark. Probably just as well. If his friends could see him and knew where he was going…

Not that he knew where he was going himself, just who he was meeting and that was bad enough!

‘An adventure,’ she had said in that enigmatic way of hers and then she had smiled.

‘What kind of adventure?’

‘…To bring something back into the world that was lost.’
