Graven Image…

‘ … And look! A man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold… His body also was like beryl and his face had the appearance of lightning. His eyes were as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to burnished brass. The voice of his words was as the voice of a multitude… and he said, “… To you am I now sent. Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, your prayers were heard and I am come for your prayers… I am come to make you understand what will befall your people in the latter days. I will show you the literal truth of these things. There is no other that can do this.”‘

It is very difficult to find any illustrations for this piece.

Perhaps that is linked to the Hebraic injunction against graven images.

Dragon-lines

*

Eight dragons watch the landscape, gazing out across the land

To where the lines originate and guarding where they stand

An ancient story carved in stone depicts old myths and new

To show that though the story shifts, its essence still holds true,

Just as the church’s sacred heart hides Mysteries untold

Carved figures point the way to finding spiritual gold.

Beyond the painted windows where the secrets are concealed

Held in the arms of Nature is Divinity revealed;

For as above, so is below, and as without, within…

There is more to the Crucifix than pardon bought for sin.

Announcing the WINNERS of the Sue Vincent Rodeo Classic at the Carrot Ranch

When the doctors told me that the cancer had spread to my brain, they also told me that I did not have long left…’days to weeks’ were their words. At this point, the wonderful folks at the Carrot Ranch wrote to tell me about the Rodeo, the competition and what they hoped to achieve.

The response was phenomenal.

I cannot stress how much it meant to see all the good wishes coming in… to watch my sons hold themselves up with pride because it seems as if my work has touched other lives in such a positive manner. And, while my body continues to fall apart, my heart is full.
On a practical note, the donations that came in have helped enormously with the cost of specialised equipment.

Who knew how expensive this dying malarkey can be? In search of decent few hours sleep for the first time in ages, yesterday I had a new chair delivered that allows me to stand to get into the wheelchair. As my left leg no longer moves, this is a real gift. And I slept in it for hours…

I did not expect to be here today to be able to thank everyone who took part in any and every way, from buying, reading and reviewing the books, to the entries and donations and the love and kindness I have been shown.

Congratulations to the winners of the competition!

Head on over to the Carrot Ranch to find out who…and read the winning entries.

Reblogged  from The Carrot Ranch

When the Rodeo came to town, Rough Writers from around the world answered the call. You came, you sat in the saddle, you rode the bull, and you joined the parade.

Most important, you were inspired by our wonderful friend, Sue Vincent. Sue has been battling terminal cancer, and we’re thrilled that she is around to see the winners (though I admit I cheated and let her know the top winner a little early). Participants were allowed and encouraged to donate to help Sue and her family, but we believe the photo she provided as the prompt was worthy of any prize. Her photo prompted 63 wonderful 99 word stories and 99 syllable poems; if the average picture is worth 1,000 words, then we can be certain her prompt is way above average!

Temple of Living Lore…

Maiden Castle

*

“Of course, once you have written one book,

the next one is easy…”

*

It was true that we still had things we wanted to say,

and some things which we had thought might make it into the first book

but didn’t, would naturally need to go into the next one…

*

As one fan later commented, “It has a different feel.”

Which it does.

And, although we were doing the same things,

the focus had shifted slightly, to incorporate that body

of lore, and legend, and tales, which exist, and have always existed

to show us the way to plot a meaningful course

through our Blessed Isle’s real history.

Worlds within worlds opening

Wonder is the key

Amorphous figures gather

Half-glimpsed in shadow

Flowers at your feet

Infinite landscapes await

Birds of a Feather

solo 002That the birds were there first means little to Ani. It is, as far as she is concerned, her garden and she decides who gets to play in it. Apart from the stray babies, those she makes an exception for and will even call the cavalry to their rescue. There is no malice in her vociferous warnings to the feathered fiends who invade her space. In fact, she grins all the time she is chasing them off.

The cat next door, on the other hand, stalks them silently, moving a whisker at a time, closing in for that final, fatal pounce.

bird 002Me, on the other hand, I like birds. I love to hear them herald the morning as I wake, the first light washing the bedroom in pale colour. I love to watch them darting around the garden, or soaring in the blue above. They are creatures of grace and beauty who carry music within and rise above the landscape, seeing it with eyes other than my own. In quiet moments imagination lends me their wings and I can rise with them to greet the dawn.

solo 0311The three of us watch the same sparrow on the fence from completely different viewpoints, with different emotions and imperatives fuelling our actions. I suppose we are simply following the dictates of our own species and nature.

Aira Force ~ Mike Biles

Reblogged from A Bit About Britain…a place of extraordinary beauty:

Aira Force, UllswaterThe walk to Aira Force, a small but beautifully formed waterfall in England’s Lake District, is a favourite.  It’s great if you’re not feeling like struggling up a serious fell, or walking too far; so you certainly don’t need to be Sherpa Tenzing to get to it.  You do need decent footwear, working limbs and lungs; but that’s about it.  You can, of course, build a visit to the falls into a longer walk, but most visitors seem to arrive by car, take one of several alternative footpaths to the top of the falls, skid back downhill and drive on.  One path is very easy and relatively short – but it’s still a little rugged in places, so for heaven’s sake change out of Jimmy’s shoes. Or whatever.

Aira Force, waterfalls, Lake DistrictAira Force is where the Aira Beck tumbles off the high fells about 66’ (20 metres) vertically in a noisy gush of white foam, on its way down to Ullswater.  ‘Aira’ allegedly comes from the Old Norse words eyrr for ‘gravel bank’ and á, meaning ‘river.  Fors is also a Norse word, common in these parts, meaning ‘waterfall’.

I decided to NEVER write fiction again~ Guest Post by @marysmithwriter #humor #writing

Reblogged from Barb Taub and Mary Smith:

When you’re writing what you love, it’s the most fun you can have with your clothing still on, unless of course you write naked. —Don Roff

My dog Peri is glad Mary Smith isn’t doing another fiction novel because she would probably be the first one Mary would kill off. I hope the rest of us will enjoy this repost of Mary’s guest blog from a few years back.

Why I Decided NEVER to Write Fiction Again

–Guest post by Mary Smith

After I got over my initial disappointment the email I received from Barb was not an invitation to join her on her travels in India, I felt flattered to be asked to contribute a guest post while she is away. I thought her suggested theme of ‘Vacation’ was just slightly rubbing in my non-invite to India, especially when gazing out at skies which have been grey for weeks.
