‘Going Underground’…

County Down, Thursday 16th June, 2022…

***

***

The information board

cannot be relied upon to furnish

accurate information

but they can offer, if not a landing strip

then at least, a spring board on to better things.

***

***

This will not be the first souterrain

we have explored…

***

***

But it turns out

to be one of the best yet!…

Wateresk Dolmen…

County Down, Thursday, 16th June, 2022…

***

Certainly, such huge stones

look difficult to move

from place to place…

‘A New Place’…

County Down, Thursday, 16th June, 2022…

***

***

For the first time

since our first site

a couple of days ago

there are people!

***

***

And some kind of fairy-thorn

within the circle!

***

***

This is unusual.

Resonant circles tend to repel plant life.

*

Are the two connected?

***

***

Apart from the offerings?

The Stones of Ballynoe…

County Down, Thursday, 16th June, 2022…

***

***

We came across a number of green

wyrm-holes in Cornwall

and they often spat us out

in wondrous locations…

***

***

The same magic appears

to hold sway here too!

***

***

Loch Lethglas was half-green

from the ground

to the crown of his head…

Mound of Down…

County Down, Thursday, June 16th, 2022…

***

***

Such is the size and nature of these structures

that the photographers art can seldom do them justice.

*

The front end of the enclosure is massive

and since the re-encroachment of nature

it now just looks like a huge wall of trees.

***

Artistic impression of the mound settlement in the ninth century

***

Despite historical insistence that such

features were defensive

it is far more likely that they were symbolic.

***

Folklore links wild oxen with the site,

and it may well be that its design

takes its inspiration from the hoof of an ox.

***

***

Curiously, from above,

the site looks like nothing less

than a single eye…

Drumskinney…

County Fermanagh, Wednesday 15th June, 2022…

***

***

With these ‘fellas’ as a prelude

we could be forgiven

for thinking the day was to end with a bang.

***

***

But what we got was a sort of summation.

***

***

Drumskinney has the look

and feel of a show circle

but it does confirm many of the impressions

gained from our morning sojourn at Little-Big Moor…

The Head-Stones of Boa Isle…

County Fermanagh, Wednesday, June 15th, 2022…

***

***

Despite the plaited hair

this side of the ‘Janet and John’ stone

is now regarded as a masculine figure.

***

***

Whilst this is the feminine.

*

The hair of the two figures is entwined,

and it may be that the ‘belts’ of both figures

is actually a binding.

***

In the oldest part of the Battle of Moytura,

the ‘Good-God’ of the Crafty Folk, who is also a giant,

takes the Morrigan on his back into battle…

Field of Towers…

County Tyrone, Wednesday, June 18, 2022…

***

***

Barbrook One* on Big Moor

in Derbyshire, England, follows a similar pattern.

***

***

But there, the cairn is associated with only one circle.

***

***

And the cairn has a different structure.

***

***

The stones heaped

in a mound

rather than a hub.

***

***

Though there are cairns

like that on Little-Big Moor too…
