Summer Souvenirs? ~ Jules #writephoto

Love tokens to a partner or just feeding a fledgling?
I watched one Cardinal at the feeder, shell the seed
And take it to another perched in the pine,
Gently with care place the seed in the open beak.

The Small Dog Plays Mother…

I’m a creature of habit, I have my routine,

I know where she’s going, I know where she’s been,

I don’t like her going out late, or at all,

I’d rather she stayed home with me to play ball.

*

This morning she did things before she went out

With stuff in the bathroom, that left me in doubt

As to whether she thought I’d be easy to fool…

But sometimes a break in routine can be cool.

*

She brought home my boy, ‘cause his bathroom is broke

And for two-legses having no bathroom’s no joke.

So, he came to use hers (I will not call it mine)

And to have him around for a while was just fine.

Alchemic Interlude ~ Running Elk

Reblogged from Stepping Stones:

Segment of the macrocosm showing the elemental spheres of terra (earth), aqua (water), aer (air), and ignis (fire), Robert Fludd, 1617 Deutsche Fotothek, Public Domain.

Stumbled on this looking for something yet unfound. (If any of you spotted me placing a small, “Basildon Blue” envelope full of photographs into an unusual nook, please let me know!)

Anyway. It’s something. It’s nothing. It struck me as fitting somewhere. For someone. It’s at least 10 years old; an experience of the four Elements that took a rather unexpected turn into a fifth.

Refinding it has prompted a further look at the nature of the Elements, their attributes, and whether the ‘modern’ set of correspondences (both in the Greek and Chinese systems) may be considered a genuine reflection on how more ancient cultures perceived these “seeds of creation”.

Ah, you’ve caught me.
Come and sit with me while I explain.
Do you remember the early days of our courtship?
You made silver and gold roses from the lining of cigarette packets.
We both smoked then, so I had a lot of flowers!
I found a small stone the shape of a heart on the beach.
We still have it, along with a multitude of tiny shells.

Going West – Kilpeck’s West Window

Wales 151

You’d have to go a long way to beat the door at Kilpeck church, but the western wall has a place all of its own. You might be forgiven for thinking it was a bit of Norse construction and the swirling lines of carving look like zoomorphic creatures, or Celtic knots… but not your typical Norman… or anything you might reasonably expect to find adorning a church in a tiny English village five miles from the Welsh border. Yet, at first glance, you might miss it.

Wales 005

Three huge stone dragons, with protruding and coiled tongues, jut out from the corners of the wall and below the west window. A fourth is broken. Each of them is different, as if showing the sequence of the opening of the mouth… which makes them sound rather Egyptian too, though I wonder how much the inner meaning of such symbolism is universal.

Wales 092

The dragons do not go unchallenged though… a dog, or more probably a lion, bites at its neck. A fleur de lys curls around the attacker, and I wonder what that might mean.

Dear Wen: Superstitions…

Dear Wen,

Understanding, for some, has been around for millenia…

But is ‘standing under ‘ a concept the same thing as having a concept ‘hanging over you’ ? Or is that merely superstition?

Sheep really shouldn’t be behaving in that way, not only are they stalking prey, they have taken up the battle position known in military circles as the ‘arrow-head’ phalanx.

This particular pattern was first used by the Athenians at Marathon when they withstood Xerxes and his Persian armies long enough to save their city state, or was that the Spartans at Thermopylae? And what precisely is a ‘heated pylon’ and how in those hoary old days were they heating them? By hot-spring, presumably…

The state of our own cities is much less secure and seems destined to finally ‘crumble’ or ‘putter-out’ under the combined force of home-workers and mask-wearers.

Which would mean that Mister Wells was sort of right, but was also sort of wrong too.

Perhaps the crystal ball he was using was occluded?

Edna sat down at her favorite bench, giving silent thanks that it was open. She had seen it occupied at other times of the day, but it was always open for her late morning breakfast and had been for years.

How long had it been?

She thought back. She had started to come down to the park the year after Ed died. Let’s see, that was in ’98. And it was two years later that she settled on that one bench.

So there it was, 18 years of sitting there with her lunch every day.
