Fascinated by the feather, I touched it
Waves of fear shook me
A strange figure greeted me:
“Welcome to the land of sorcery

Watch from a distance
You are a part of this world.”
I tried to follow my first instinct
“Run,” my mind shrieked

Outside in

Image result for cat and lion mirror

It was odd. I look at this particular blogger’s page every day…and every day there is a reblog button. On every post. Except today. I clicked into the title, hoping that by going deeper, I would find what I was looking for. Nothing. I couldn’t understand it at all. There were, in fact, few of the usual options and I could not imagine what had prompted the blogger to make this particular piece unshareable. Or why I suddenly had to fill in a form to leave a comment. Or why, when the theme had not been changed, it should look so different.

They must, I decided, have been the victim of some online horror… trolls, ID theft, hackers… all sorts of scenarios began to roil around in my mind. I thought about my own online presence and its security and wondered if I ought to take the hint and tighten things up. I hoped my friend was okay. These things can be nasty and upsetting. Perhaps I should email to check?

In those few seconds, my reaction to the lack of a simple button was going a long way…and the possible causes and consequences were already starting to pile up in my mind and imagination. Until I realised what the problem was. Between clicking the link in the daily email and arriving at the site, somehow, I had been logged out of WordPress. There was nothing wrong with my friend’s page at all. What was wrong was how I was seeing it; as an ‘outsider’.

For them these are token of love like a sweetheart,

Roberta Eaton reviews Gallows Hill by Charles F. French

Reblogged from Roberta Writes:

What Amazon says

History always makes an impact on the present. Retired homicide detective Sam Sadlowski faces his personal history and fears as well as living and dead enemies.

My review

Gallows Hill is the second book in The Investigative Paranormal Society series. I have read the first book, Maledicus, so I was engaged with the characters in this book before I started it. In Maledicus, I quickly became very attached to the main character, Roosevelt or Rosy to his friends, and also to Helena, the little girl who becomes the focus of Maledicus’ evil intentions.

Offerings ~ Jez Farmer #writephoto

Author’s Notes: The first time I have written a prompt write live from Becci’s house, and I am sat listening to the rain chuck it down as we approach the late summer bank holiday. Thank you Sue for another dash of inspiration, which can be found here

My form is free verse

Offerings

A token gift of sacrifice
an offering of time and thought
without gaudy wrappings shouting
no expense spared
for the gods cannot be bought
Mother nature shows the way
her gifts of life and love

Going West – The Kilpeck Corbels

Wales 035

Kilpeck’s bellcote reminded me of the first church we had visited, where our adventures had begun, though this one is a nineteenth century addition, carved and decorated in keeping with the rest of the building; restorations have been gentle here. But it was a small carving we had mainly come to see, one of the corbels… and probably one of the most famous and photographed corbels on any church. But first, we had to find it. You wouldn’t think that finding a corbel would be all that difficult… they support the roof, so you know where to look… but…

Wales 036

…where on earth do you start with the corbels at Kilpeck church? Like the fabulous door, they have survived almost entirely intact. Originally, there were ninety-one of them, holding up the carved and decorated eaves of the roof. Now there are fewer… a ‘mere’ eighty-four survive after nearly nine hundred years. Plus the heads that flank the windows. And the great dragons or serpents that watch over the west end of the church. And… well, it just goes on and on…

If we needed any reminder of how much of the visual language of such carvings we have lost over the centuries, Kilpeck would do the trick. There are birds, fish and beasts… an entire bestiary of them… but closer inspection reveals they are not all quite what they first appear to be. Many of the designs seem to contain human heads.

Dear Don: ‘Dead Enkidu?’…

Dear Don,

I am not sure I would apply the term ‘Covenanter’ to Donaldson’s doubting Thomas, not with its political ramifications, but his ‘unbelief’ does mirror the apparent choice of our ‘advanced’ society to shunt magic, miracles and a recognition of the hidden life around us into the realm of ‘fairytales’.

Not that fairytales should be dismissed either… at least not the old ones, which, like the myths and legends, such as that of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, show just how much the ancients knew of psychology, millennia before the label for that study was coined.

“If I can label it, it is mine…” The hand that grasps, again. Even when the understanding has been around for thousands of years.

Part of that conversation the other day was about the relationship between quantum entanglement and consciousness… which sounded suspiciously like the theory behind magic to me.  In which case, you have to wonder exactly what, was behind our little swimming shrew and the sheep playing ‘statues’ at Nine Stones Close.

The Matter of Britain…

*

Could there be an image more redolent

of the true majesty of these isles?

*

We are minded of the church at Kilpeck

with its famous and resplendant Sheila…

*

The fact that we had failed to get here

last time, or had been prevented,

seems indicative of a grace earned

which graces never are…

*

More accurately, perhaps, of a labyrinth trod,

blindfold from beginning to end,

with only child-like, inner promptings, as guide…
