The Token ~ Alethea Kehas #writephoto

The raven circled in wait while the seeker studied the land. The bird knew her in the memory of her bones and the knowing had brought the raven into flight to follow the girl’s path. Finally she had arrived. Millenia had passed and the raven’s ancestors foretold that she would someday be there to recover the magic held inside the stones. They had watched time pass without judgement or remorse, tending the land as they did the skies with patience.

Some who traveled the land foretold doom in the birds’ black visage, shivering at the shadows cast upon their souls, unsettling the darkness they held within. It was not the raven’s darkness, but those that hovered inside their shadows. This the ravens knew as they circled the light and waited for the awakened one.

Just a shell

just a shell

It’s just a shell.
Small but perfect,
Picked up on the beach that day.
Its sits beside the little stone you found,
Children hand in hand
Along a winter shore.

It’s just a shell.
Nothing very special
There were hundreds of them
Washed up on the beach that way
Strewn across the sand
When the tide came.

It’s just a shell
A hollow thing
And empty, just a memory
Of a gifted day
Beside the waves.

I have it still.
It’s just a shell.
It sits within my hand
And I hear laughter
Dancing in the windswept dunes
And smile through tears
And face the day…
Just a shell.

Now an eBook – Alone: A Winter in the Woods, by Felicity Sidnell Reid…

Reblogged from The Story Reading Ape:

I’m excited to announce that almost five years after the publication of Alone: A Winter in the Woods as a print edition(Hidden Brook Press 2015), the book is now released as an e-book

Alone: A Winter in the Woods is a story for all ages. It quickly engages the reader in thirteen year-old John Turner’s adventures. Forced to grow up quickly, while left alone on the family’s land grant in a virtually unsettled township, on the shore of Lake Ontario, in the winter of 1797, John has to overcome devastating isolation and loneliness.

I knew it, and didn’t I say I knew it beforenows…and didn’t I say, beforenows, I told yuz so?

Mister Park is sitting before his shiny stainless-steel drinking bowl – ‘cept it ain’t so shiny no more. Puke-coloured scratch furs are everywhere. He eyeballs the hard evidence, eyeballs Profit&Loss and eyeballs Sherbet, wot sitting on the stairs, head deliberately turned away.

The bowl is whipped away, washed in the sink, and replaced brimming with cold clean water. Mister Park immediately slurps fast before any other nasty surprises.

notsofast,Jindywindy” Loss scolds him “you’llmakeamess

Me?slurp slurp slurpMess?

Sherbet swivels its head and observes him between the bannisters. Waiting.

Stare, why don’t yu he barks yu guilty party, yu!

For pity’s sakes, this is outrageous

Going West – An Extraordinary Place

Wales 191

What are those? ” The bumps in the fields as we drove down the narrow lane looked suspiciously like the remnants of early occupation.

“They look like earthworks…” It would make sense, the little church we were heading for was old and the site upon which it now stood even older. Many of the best of these old churches were built upon ancient sites. Sometimes, we believe,  it was because they were sites of ancient sanctity and that is where the local folk chose to honour this new face of divinity. Sometimes it was the priests and lords who chose to take over the old site, following the directive from Rome to occupy them so that the inhabitants simply came to their accustomed sacred place and were converted almost by default.

Wales 004

Once a church was established, it was not unusual for subsequent generations to demolish and rebuild on the earlier foundations and many of our thousand-year old churches have been places of worship for a great deal longer than we know. The current church at Kilpeck was built around AD 1140. It stands on what is thought to be the site of a much older, probably Saxon church and within a raised, oval churchyard that is typical of even older, Celtic churches. The Christian tradition in the area dates back at least as far as the late Roman period, and the Romans left Britain for good in AD 410. There may well be Roman remains at the site and there has been some suggestion of it being a megalithic site before that, although nothing has yet been found to definitively confirm this theory.

Wales 0121

We knew it had a few special things to discover, but we had not done our research beforehand. We seldom do, preferring to find what is there without preconceptions and without spoiling the sense of awe and surprise. The research comes later. Even from a distance, we could tell that the red sandstone church was unusual with its curved apse, though, to be fair, the stonework looked in such good condition that we feared that it would prove rebuilt and over-restored. Still, we had largely come to see one small carving, so the rest didn’t matter much.

Wales 027

“Er… there’s a castle next door….” I parked the car. We grabbed the cameras and got out.

“What’s left of one anyway. On a mound.” Now, these old mounds are a bit of a mystery. Most of them are listed as ‘Norman, motte and bailey’, but many are not in defensible positions, nor do they have a large enough summit to be anything more than watchtowers.

with all due speed shall be accomplished,

for never shall rest take hold of my heart,

nor sleep close the lids of my eyes,

A Magical Token of Friendship ~ Mason Bushell #writephoto

They say; You have to believe it to see the magic.

Twelve-year-old Elsie believed with all her heart. Every time she got the chance, she’d run through her back garden and into the ancient oak woods beyond. She’d make her way through the bushes, and around the trees to the glade.

It was an almost perfect circle of grasses, and small shrubs surrounded by the dense woodland. There was a scattering of rocks, some covered in mosses other bare within the flora.

Elsie discovered a peculiar granite rock here. She knew it wasn’t natural, it bore the face of a man with black stones for eyes. Curiously it was part of a small circle of rocks. This became Elsie’s favourite place to play. She’d have dinner parties with her dolls and even read her fairytales here.
