Head of the Serpent…

There is an old adage that if you chop off the tail of a snake,

the head will turn around and bite you,

but if you chop off its head,

then the tail has nowhere to go.

Causeway ~ Nova #writephoto

Growing up, Leylianna couldn’t swim; neither of her parents took the time to teach her. Now that she’s grown, she decided to explore the water. She was determined to teach herself; however, an eight foot pool in her backyard simply wouldn’t do.

When she taught herself to swim, she was going to be one with water. She was going to be in it’s natural location. She was going to wade in, ankle deep, introducing herself to the water. She was going to enjoy the summer sun kissing her skin, as she ran her thin weightless fingers through the cool surroundings.

Rebels without a choice?

Image: Big Brother by The Digital Artist at Pixabay

A mere quarter of a mile from my home the traffic ground to an unaccustomed halt. The sporadic nature of its movement proclaimed a contraflow in action somewhere up ahead and, with no other way of accessing my street, I settled down to patiently wait in the Great British Queue… an institution we are good at in this country. Mainly through interminable practice. The grass verge beside the road looked inviting. Wider than the road itself, flat and unobstructed, it leads to the lane that runs to my home a mere few hundred yards away. I didn’t take it of course…partly because it would undoubtedly churn up the grass, but mainly because it isn’t the ‘done thing’.

I glare at the cameras beside the road that now monitor the movement of every vehicle in the country, ostensibly in order to check we have all paid our road tax, but in reality just part of what seems to be an inexorable movement towards the impossibility of anonymity; of escaping from the needs and obligations of the daily grind with at least the illusion of freedom. Shades of Orwell’s dystopia rear their heads… I can’t say I like the insidious increase in surveillance. Not that I don’t understand and approve of security. Not that I particularly wish to hide; but privacy and choice matter to me. Lately it seems as if many minor incursions are being made into the small liberties and I wonder just how far it will go… and how it happens that we simply accept in silence.

I had begun to ponder this whole question earlier, checking sell by dates for one of my sons and disposing of large quantities of things for him which had passed them. He and many others of his generation that I know seem obsessed by the dates on packets. A minor thing, you might think, but it sparked a train of thought as I sat there in the traffic. I know it is a generational thing, because, of course, I grew up in a world that had never heard of putting a sell by date on an apple. Tins and packets, perhaps… though even those, we were taught, were only an indication, a safeguard, and probably marked a midway point in shelf-life. Common sense was the thing; we were taught to apply it to food and make informed decisions.

Hope in the Shadowland ~ Alethea Kehas #writephoto

In the land filled with shadows hope slipped behind the clouds as the light receded. The great womb of the sea felt the hollow, pulsing the dull ache of emptiness. “What have we done?” the lonely souls called into the wind. Long ago they had given up a reply, but something was different about today. The breeze felt softer on their skin, like a mother’s caress, urging. It brought the scent of honey to their lips. “How can it be?” they wondered.

Resigned necks lifted tired heads, and eyes sought answers from the sky. How long had it been since they had looked beyond the horizon? Above, gray clouds morphed into shapes deformed and grotesque. Yet still the eyes gazed above, transfixed, for the eyes were seeing themselves. “Do not look away,” the voice whispered through their minds, “you must see who you are and who you can become.”

Wait, wait, it’s coming…. N. A. Granger

Reblogged from Sayling Away:

Anxiety is building. My new book, The Last Pilgrim, is scheduled for release on June 1. The final version of the PDF has been uploaded and we are just waiting on the person creating the book jacket to do his thing.

The artist who painted the cover for me had it framed, and it’s now on my wall!

Here are some of the line drawings, done by moi, for the book. Do you know what they are (except for the house)?

Horizon ~ D. Wallace Peach #writephoto

Dare I fly from the sea’s rim to the sun’s white center
When sorrow bleeds crimson from my tongue and fingertips
Will I sing through the throat of hope, the beauty of the human story?
My wings unfold with the flame of a yearning soul

When sorrow bleeds crimson from my tongue and fingertips
If heart’s betrayals bend me beneath grief and despair
My wings unfold with the flame of a yearning soul
As hallowed skies blaze away the bruised ache of living

Causeway ~ Honoré Dupuis #writephoto

This is where we started, in these shallow waters, that erased our steps:

the slippery seaweeds, the smooth rocks, where we dreamed of another shore,

by the violet sea, hidden by parsecs of space,

on the planet of the five stars.

St Michael’s victory over the Devil – Sculptor, Jacob Epstein

*

The French occultist, Eliphas Levi, the German philosopher Franz von Baader, and the Theurgist, Louis Claude de St. Martin spoke of 1879 as the year in which Michael overcame the dragon.

In 1917, Rudolf Steiner the founder of anthroposophy, similarly stated, “In 1879, in November, a momentous event took place, a battle of the Powers of Darkness against the Powers of Light, which ended in the image of St Michael overcoming the Dragon.”

Causeway ~ Lee Ann #writephoto

Note: I came across this #writephoto challenge several weeks ago and liked the concept. We’re to “use the image and title provided as inspiration to create a post… poetry, prose, humor… light or dark, whatever we choose… There is no word limit and no style requirements, except to keep it fairly family-friendly and not passionately political”.

I wrote this in a hurry this morning feeling the need to express myself before I must head to the weirdest doctor appointment due to this pandemic time.

My thoughts fly towards Thee
This is my plea
I long to be free
