Ribbons of light

fox 101

“There was a rainbow waiting for them above the barrow. Its head was lost in the halo of cloud which mirrored the encircling hills. If the landscape itself is the grail of legend, then the hill is the jewel at its heart.
Even today with the air a magical haze on the horizon you can see them, the hills, our hills, outlined faintly across the far distance like stepping stones to vision.
They are beacons.”

Giants Dance: Rhyme and Reason

fox 001“…blessed by rainbows.” I can never capture them all on camera, and I manage to do justice to none, but some things are a gift simply to be lived.

fox 006
The weather has been that of a typical English spring. In the ever-shifting light the world changes, the familiar becomes strange… eerie, ethereal. Otherworldly. What meets our eyes is different moment to moment and what is now will never be again. Each fleeting present becomes the past and the future has no beginning.

fox 097“…“Most people think that statements like ‘the end of time’ refer to a point in the far distant future.”
“Never realising that both the beginnings and the ends of time are here, now.”
“Never realising that time is transcend-able.”
“How did the ancients do it?”
“They climbed hills… told stories… and initiated people.”
“Once, upon a time that is no time…””

Giants Dance: Rhyme and Reason

fox 0051It is then we see the land before us change, molten gold in a sunrise or white with frost, diamond bright in the morning, and we see it anew, clothed in festal garments; a bride veiled in white and gold to whom all eyes turn. The shared perception of a rainbow that both is and is not real, yet is seen by companions in a moment of shared vision and joy as something of magical beauty that affirms a reality greater than the narrow confines of our daily lives.

fox 104“…The wind slams into the hillside, snatching breath.
No torch, no flame could withstand the blast as the sun ascends to its zenith…
Yet there were torches winding around the hill in the darkness in a spiral-like galaxy of flame.
A figure waits at the highest point, outlined in stars against the night…
And another stands in sunlight, a silhouette on the rainbow crowned barrow…
Feet rest upon a mound yet to be raised, a house of the ancient dead who have yet to die.”

Giants Dance: Rhyme and Reason

fox 100Something as simple, as ‘normal’ as a dawn or a sunrise can capture our attention, waking us from the mechanical march of the hours, infusing us with life and awareness as the land itself is suffused with colour from the kiss of the sun. We are lifted out of the ordinary, transported to a place that is both within and without, where questions flower and possibilities blossom with becoming, as if the ribbons of light in the landscape are only a mirror for the touch of Light within.

I think there are more words to sum up your gift, Sue, but I think – for now – the word ‘superlative’ about sums up the above. What insight, and what writing!! Superb. xx
