Snow in summer

deer day 042I stood like a mountain
Astride the plain
Watching with slow eyes
As life passed beneath me.
Feeling the seasons on my skin,
Each year a mere frisson,
And the years passed
Until snow silenced me.

I waited immobile
For the errant warmth
Not knowing or hoping
That it would find me;
Just waiting, as mountains do,
For time to take me,
Unresisting whiteness
Slowly eroded.

Kissed by the sun
I ran like water
Out of myself
A fluid gem
Laughing in the sunlight.
Flowing free across the land
With petals in my wake
And diamond drops.

Earth drank me
Took me to her heart
And I became the blood
Quicksilver in her veins.
I became her milk
And rose once more
Through the green stems
Of her diadem.

I sparkled in her crown
Jewels in her garland
Till the sun rose
And warmed me.
I rose then, insubstantial
Wedded to the clouds
That cast snowflakes
On the mountain.

This aptly describes a few “seasons” I’ve seen in my life along the way. (And, as you wrote it, I know you’ve seen them as well.)

In all, whether verdant or frozen, the key is to keep standing.

Thanks, Marilyn. They were both taken one snowy day in the Lake District… when I took my little MR2 down roads she was never meant for to places I would not have issed for the world.
