Dream ~ Willow Willers #writephoto

Sleep would not come, just waves of fear and pain. There was no silence either. Voices discussing, the news, gardens, family, Covid… I can’t blame them this was their day. Their shift, they would go home and sleep.

The scariest thing was the voice that echoed through the ward of the disturbed patient who repeated and repeated “It’s the Covid cough, the Covid, Covid, cough gonna get you” If he was not sleeping that’s all I could hear. It was better during the day because he’d call out for “Tea tea” and the nurses would bring him one and then he would shout “Happy Birthday” and we’d all smile.

The Small Dog Chills…

I thought I’d relax in the sun for a while,
Just soak up some rays, be off guard, chill and smile,
The cows have all gone from just over my fence…
No reason for me to be watchful and tense.

They’re always so curious, I’ll have you know,
Keep sticking their heads through where heads shouldn’t go,
There’s holes in the hedges where they watch and moo…
So I watch them back… well, what else can I do?

The crows are all busy, the pigeons have flown,
The sparrows and robins? Their chicks have all grown.
For once I am left with no guarding to do…
Perhaps I should dig for a bone I could chew?

I’m settled all peacefully, planning my day,
But strange smells and noises are coming my way…
There’s men in my field using sticks to hit balls!
I get to my feet, ‘cause I know duty calls.

Dreaming of Heather ~ Iain Kelly #writephoto

The bed sheets are damp with sweat. The muggy, warm air offers no relief. I unwrap myself and lie on top of the duvet. This weather has to break soon.

It isn’t just the close atmosphere that has made me sweat. I had been dreaming of her again. Vague images of my dream come back to me as I lie in the dark.

A summer’s day. A field of purple. She’s wearing a white dress, translucent in the sunlight. She dances with a flower in her hair: ethereal, light and shimmering. Her smile beckons and delights.

A very occasional poet ~ Tallis Steelyard

Reblogged from Jim Webster aka Tallis Steelyard:

A very occasional poet

I have known Stanlan Needleborne for virtually all of my life. He was the tough kid on the street, the rough boy we were all a bit nervous of. Looking back I cannot imagine why, I don’t remember him ever being anything but a friend to the rest of us street children. As we grew up he went for a soldier.

Obviously with his background he didn’t follow the easy route. At fifteen he tagged along to one of the impromptu and largely expendable infantry companies. Against the odds he survived. Next year he went back into Partann again. By the time he was twenty he was an accepted captain of crossbowmen, and was hired as such by the great condottieri captains to command some portion of their infantry.

Dream ~ Joelle LeGendre #writephoto

My dreams aren’t yours to destroy.
Marriage is a partnership.
.
I did not enlist to fight
in a two-person army,
nor do I obey commands.
.
My dreams were of happiness,
life with someone who loved me.

A Thousand Miles of History XXXIX: Seeking Sanity…

For once we had the forethought to ask the lady in the church for directions to our next port of call… the Holy Well in St Cleer. After our almost accidental visit to the Holy Well at Madron that morning, we felt we should see this one… and we were later to learn that the Mary Line runs straight through the well and the cross that stands beside it.

There is no saying how long this particular well has been venerated. The Christian rite of baptism and the shift in allegiance for the healing properties of water were a natural progression for many ancient wells where pre-Christian reverence had long held sway. Offerings have been found at our holy springs and wells going back to the earliest times, and there are thought to be over six hundred known sites still in existence here and a number of them have yielded offerings linking them to the Celtic reverence for the severed head. It is interesting, in that case, to consider that we still use the term ‘well head’…

Researching St Cleer’s Well threw up some interesting snippets. It seems there is some debate about whether the village was named after St Clarus to whom the church is dedicated. Clarus’ Feast Day is November 4th, which is also the Feast of St. Clether, who is also known as Cleer and Clederus. St Clether was the son of King Brychan Brycheiniog, who ruled in south Wales and his brother was St Nectan, whose hermitage still exists, in one of the most magical and beautiful of glens, close to Tintagel, where King Arthur is said to have been born. Clether ruled the area around Nevern after his father’s death and fathered twenty sons. We had seen the memorial to Maelgwn, one of his sons… the Maglicu stone… when we had visited St Brynach’s church in Nevern. When St Brynach brought the early Christian message to his court, Clether abdicated and himself became a hermit. Perhaps St Clarus was not ‘St Cleer’ after all?

Never West… Steve Tanham

I’ve always loved maps… I can remember, when a child, being bought a fold-out schematic of a town with streets, main roads, a river, a hill and a railway line. It was just a layout – a map – but I had lots of my own cars, a model train and some small figures of the right scale to populate the town with activity. “Where are you?” my mother asked, shortly after I became joyfully lost in the richly-featured landscape on the carpet. I looked up, puzzled by the question. I picked up a plastic farmer and offered it to her.

~*~

The vista I behold in front of my eyes

Seems like have walked into a dream

It looks surreal, the beauty is like something

My brain has conjured up from a fairytale

I tread cautiously so that I may not disturb

The otherworldly charm of this enchanting place

I draw the subtle scent of heather in my lungs

A calm descends upon my soul, refreshing it

I follow the path to the distant promise

My destination is just over yonder I can see

I tread with care not to disturb the beauty
