A Small Gift

It was one of those encounters that bring a little unexpected joy to the day. Nothing much… just a shared smile… something I’m missing at the moment. Seeking relief from the heat, I had wandered into the shade of my son’s back garden while I waited for him to finish in the bathroom. Plonking myself in the chair, I realised I was being watched… from about the requisite two metres, of course. Which may seem like a lot when you greet someone, but is not very far when it is all that separates you from a wild bird.

The blackbird showed no inclination to depart. I wondered, from his stillness, if he might be injured… the local cats like to sunbathe in this spot. He seemed bright enough, though, preening and fluffing his feathers, before hopping down from his perch onto a wider stage. He certainly didn’t mind my presence, not even when I was obliged to shout through in answer to my son’s call.

I think he was hot too, as he paraded up and down behind the woodwork, bill open. But he looked rather comical, and, with the constant eye contact, seemed almost as if he was hamming it up for his audience.

It wasn’t much… just a few minutes complicity with a common garden bird… but those moments of shared and willing contact with another species changed the mood of my day from grey to sunshine.

Considering Heaven and Earth… ~ Stuart France

*

First a formless mass of light,

then the firmament of stars,

then sun and moon,

then sea and land,

then reptiles, and birds,

then beasts, and man,

and then, contemplation…

*

If the ‘candlestick vision’ which opens the Book of Revelation,

is an allusion to the Menorah,

then the central figure of that vision

stands for the earth-sphere and all of those who dwell in that realm.

Darkness ~ Lazarus Shatipamba #writephoto

The shining, smiling sun sets
and the dreadful darkness descends
upon the land, to frighten and force
the people indoors.

Callanish Calling: Threshold…

Anyway, Wen was wrong…

It’s not a ‘reckie’ we’re on, it’s a raid!

*

But before we can ‘plunder’ Lewis

of her treasury of stone,

we have to get past the Dweller…

There is some debate over what the name actually represents

but there is no doubt about the name.

The Old Man of Storr…

*

Some say it refers to the outline of the rock face,

others that it is the pinnacle itself,

which from one angle also possesses face-like features.

*

Still others claim the pinnacle is a giant’s thumb,

and that when the land mass slid…

it buried the giant beneath an ancient rock fall.

Darkness ~ Trent P. McDonald #writephoto

A cosmic switch went from “on” to “off” and the darkness followed.

Of course it didn’t feel that way to the people living at the time. To them, the race to the end was an imperceptible crawl. The Final Event, the “switch”, had been decades in the making and many years in the execution. Even after the “switch”, the light still hung on for decades and the people were deluded into thinking all was fine as they slowly died out.

But to the planet Earth itself, the span of a few human lifetimes was as nothing, less than a cosmic blink of the eye.

Darkness ~ Willow Willers #writephoto

And so the darkness fell with a crash and a clatter waking up early evening, who was feeling rather drawn out. “Where the hell have you been it’s nine fifteen and I need some rest” Eve Nin complained. Darkness huffed and puffed and looked at his watch, ” I’m not late it mid July and I am bang on time.” He replied. “Well” Eve laughed, “your right about the bang, you made enough noise arriving to wake the dead! ” Darkness and Eve both jumped as a voice from below them screeched, “He bloody did and we are not impressed, we set our alarm for October 1st, and it’s nowhere near that yet.”

Comedy of Errors…

They,
Faceless
And faithless,
Fostering fear,
Make freedom a crime
While preserving their own.
Impose what could be chosen,
Blame science and necessity
Isolating the isolated
While hidden mouths speak words we do not hear.
We, the faceless, now hide behind the mask,
Our compliance or condemnation,
Eye meeting eye, expressions veiled,
Muffled words, muzzled voices,
A land bereft of smiles.
A world in mourning
As common sense,
Demonised,
Unmasked,
Weeps.

Reeling under scorching sun,

Dark clouds carried hope,

Carried away by playful wind,

To places that eyes couldn’t see,
