Notes from a Small Dog: Walking the two-legses

I have no idea why she thought she had to take the picture of us with the sign that mentions ‘animals on the road’… but she seemed happy enough to be out with the camera, so I let it pass.

Normally, it is just me and her… and I make sure she gets plenty of exercise by taking her for walks through the fields on the farm track, winter and summer. She doesn’t usually take the camera with her… something about me pulling her around too much to get a steady shot. It’s a poor workman that blames his or her tools, they say… and an even worse one that blames their dog. But heigh-ho… she’s only a two-legs, so she is, I suppose, a bit underprovided-for in the leg department; I can see why she might wobble a bit…

So, as we had a visitor, I took him for a walk instead and we let her tag along behind, making funning noises like a pigeon at all the fruits on the trees and all the flowers.

She says it is looking like autumn already, what with the berries and the apples and stuff. Well, of course it is! It is autumn…whatever her silly calendar says! Nature does Her own thing in her own time. I have to say, though, one tree looked promising… homegrown tennis balls! I approve of that!

But it turned out to be apples. Not sure whether they bounce, but I think I like the idea of eatable balls to play with…

‘Course, as it is autumn, I didn’t get off the leash much. It is a long leash, to be fair, and it gets really funny watching them disentangle those two legs of theirs sometimes… but it isn’t the same as running wild. Not that I run much these days, but I can still out-trot a two legs.

But, in autumn, the Big Machines go out in the fields and she says I might get hare-vested and baled… and fed to the cows if I run too far!

I’m none too sure what hare-vesting means, but I know those cows. Most of the time they live in ‘our’ field, just behind my garden. They stick their heads through the hedge too and look at me. The other morning, a whole gang of them lined up there, moo-ing… and she wouldn’t let me have a word with them either. A bit unfair that kind of species-bias… they were making enough noise and she said not a word to them. The ones she said to me I prob’ly shouldn’t repeat…

Anyway, I think the cows recognised me, ’cause they came over to say hello… or something. They don’t seem to be our usual cows either… the ones she says are full of milk I can drink… and one of them, a big black one, a lot older than the rest, had a ring through his nose.

For some reason, they didn’t want me to get too close. There’s not much in the way of fences either, so it would have been easy enough. I could have had a proper word with them about all the noise they make on a morning. But no… ‘come away, girlie’… that’s all I got… before I’d even opened my mouth too!

Still, once we were past them and knew where the Combined Hare-vester was lurking, they did, finally, take the leash off and let me have a wander. And after walking me all that way, they seemed surprised I didn’t fancy running much.

It’s a long way back, after all, and who knew what I’d have to protect them from! Cows, hawks, hare-vesting machines… a small dog can only do so much, you know! At last it was finally cool enough on the concrete for a decent walk… this hot weather has been making it too hot for my paws.

So I was glad when we finally got home and I could flop for a bit, while they went out looking for stuff in churches or something.

It’s hard work looking after two-legses, I tell you.

Much love,

Ani xxx

  2. They do get so tired these days. But they keep us busy, and it makes them — and us — happy.

Thanks for sharing your rural wanderings with us Ani. Keep a close eye on the one with the ring in his nose, like many nose ringed 2 legs he could get cantankerous. I hope it is the camera angle Ani and that you have not been snacking on the side?? Maybe more off the lead especially if a hare or rabbit taunts you.

Cameras can be unkind… and so can two-legses who keep me on careful diets. I am allowed lots of snacks and treats… but she subtracts everything I eat from what goes on my dinner plate. She calls it tough love. 😦

They can be difficult, cant they? Mine keep trying to adopt a new furry animal, a bit like me, every time they go out in the garden. This Ginger is in our garden all the time… But I’m having none of it! Sonu xx

I think we need a furry four-legged companion, Ani, as we definitely don’t get enough exercise…

I think you earned your flop, Ani. Looks like you and your bipedal pets had a lovely walk. I know what you mean about seeing signs of autumn already – we noticed that on our walks this weekend. Leaves already falling and those gorgeous colours starting to emerge. Good times to come, Ani, and cooler. Love to you all. 🙂

Sounds like you had a lovely time Ani, despite the leash. But for myself, I wish it wasn’t autumn quite yet.

  14. So sorry it wasn’t a tree of tennis balls Ani. You don’t want to try and eat too many of those though.

I don’t blame you for not running in that heat, Ani. They weren’t running, right? Best to save your energy for important stuff like chasing tennis balls. 😉

If my Dad were here, he’d say, “Chin up, Ani- cuz the gravel gets rough and hot “- :). But, he’d also tell you, “kudos to you for dealing with two-leggeds – rather like herdin’ chickens or cats, somedays – and only the strong at heart can make it through” – :).
Oakley says hi – she would have typed herself, but HER two-legged is hogging the keyboard and won’t let her have her own cellphone/ipad – – 🙂

Hiya Ani, there’s lots of interesting new smells around now the flower things are not there anymore. oh and I visited a graveyard on our holidays, it was fantastic. Mum Adele went inside the building but I had to stay outside with Mum Becca so I went for sniffs and well you know what else only to have Mum Becca say I was pulling her all the time. I was only trying to get her to notice other things. Much paw love, Dante Dawg. xxx

Oh Ani, I’m so happy to hear you’re taking such good care of the two-legses. It sounds as though they need looking after. Be careful, that long leash might trip them up. Love and hugs and a belly rub. 💕🤗💕
