I can’t help noticing…

It is beginning to look an awful lot like spring. There are buds and the first blossoms on the trees. The ground is covered in tiny wildflowers, from coltsfoot and celandine, to speedwell, daisies  and violets. From the birds building their nests, to the emergence of insects. No matter what the gardeners think they control, Nature has her own agenda.

    I’ve seen a lot of birds with nesting materials in their beaks, but the starlings have beaten them to it. We had what appeared to be a whole colony on our front lawn yesterday, many of them youngsters. I’ve already noticed a pair of blackbirds out back, so hopefully will see them raising their chicks similarly as we did in the cottage.

    Whew, it’s finally here, but we have some snow scheduled for Sunday and had a dusting on Wednesday. Thus my daffodils lasted nearly a month and the hyacinths are still going! Bet Ani is champing at the bit to be out ALL day!

    Although it’s still pretty cold here, this is the first day I’ve been able to hear the birds. If the birds have arrived, can spring be far behind?

      The birds never left, though they went a little quieter. I’m listening to the evenin birdsong as I type, with the door wide open and the smell of newly cut lawn (if such a term can be applied to the mud patch out back 😉 )

    A week ago we had a couple of warm days and we threw a whole bunch of seeds in some dirt/compost mix in seed trays. Now we bring the trays inside each night because the night-time temperatures are dropping below zero. I love March! 😀

    You’re right – it’s happening all around us – the blackthorn blossom is wonderful, pussy willow is out and there are catkins and daffodils all over the place… I just wish it was warmer and less wet!
