Notes from a small dog – A difference of opinion…

She says I need to go on a diet.

That there have been too many treats lately. That I am getting a bit broad in the beam and too heavy to lift into the bath.

Well, all I have to say is that if she is going to dangle cheese and turkey in front of my nose, whose fault is that? And if we are talking ‘broad in the beam’ here, maybe someone should look in the mirror. From behind.

She says it happens when we get older… that bits of us slow down inside and out, so we can’t eat like pups and get away with it like we used to. That we need to get out and exercise more. More walks? Anytime! More tennis balls?  I’m down with that!

But no treats? That takes all the fun out of it. And my treats are only bits of chicken… mostly. Apart from the cheese. And maybe the odd sausage or two. And the custard… Hers have had a lot of those calorie things in them lately. I’m not sure what they are but I don’t think I want any…they sound unpleasant and seem to upset her.

It’s the whole ‘we’ business that gets me. She says we are now about the same age, ’cause four-legses age quicker than two-legses. All I have to say, is that I’d like to see her chasing rabbits and pigeons…

As to the whole bath thing, well, if she can’t get me in there… I’m not going to be complaining! I say I just smell as a doglet should. She says something quite different.

There was talk of me having a bath this weekend, ’cause we had company and the ball guy has been an accessory to her criminal attempts to make me smell like a flower before. But one of my boys rescued me by making her spend all morning at the big two-legs vets,  getting him fixed. She says he’d had a bit of an accident, but I’d like to think he was protecting me from the flowery stuff. His timing was perfect for a rescue operation though 🙂

Still, there’s one treat she can’t complain about… I got a review of my book! That was a lovely surprise to start the year with! Now she says it is her name on the cover. I say she could never have written it without me and it is my face on the cover, after all.

If you would like to read the review, you need to visit Ritu at But I Smile Anyway. Ritu belongs to Sonu Singh who has obviously done a good job with his two legs… much better than I seem to be managing training mine…

Speaking of which, I think it is about time for her morning run…

Well, she calls it a walk, but we’ll see about that…

Broad in the beam? Hrmph!

Much love,

Ani xxx

  7. Poor Ani. You should get a cat. They’re always getting treats and cat treats are much meatier than dog treats, and cats are pretty slow on the uptake so you can always get in first when the packet appears.

Dot here. I’ve heard rumours of cutting back on treats for me too. You see I’ve never met a biscuit I didn’t like! As long as they take me for good runs, I think I’ll be just fine. Good luck Ani my friend. How great you got a review! xo

  13. Hi Ani. I’m sure you’ll find a way to get your treats still. Just don’t tell her you’re going to do it until after you’ve taken her for that run. Lots of licks, Lilie

  14. Hmph. I got weighed this morning and I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been: 16Kg!
Must admit though I haven’t done a lot of proper doggy exercise lately, poor foot and joints you know. Got a problem with the waterworks at the moment. It might mean treats in the bowl to disguise the pills. I know they’re there and meant to help me, but couldn’t they come in chicken treat flavour instead of bland? Gotta go, catching up on some shut eye following last night’s discomfort. Love Maggie. xx Oh, and chase a few tennis balls for me eh Ani? Thanks. xx

Ani, I call it winter weight. It comes on every winter and will disappear when the sun and the warmth return so you can be outside walking and chasing tennis balls all day. Don’t worry about it!

I agree with you… trouble is, she doesn’t seem to…or not where my treats are concerned 😦 She says that expecting a treat every single time she passes the cupboard is a bit much… Well, I think that’s what she meant 😉

  16. Dear Ani, some days before I saw in a TV health magazine that one should not diet in winter time, because the body is cooling down too much when it needs all its energy for getting well through the winter. 😉

Oh, Ani, I’m sure you won’t be put on a strict diet. You only need to look at her with those big expressive eyes and sausgaes, chicken and cheese will be offered. I did smile the image of Sue chasing pigeons though I don’t think it’s likely to happen. Once the weather imporves you’ll have more chance to run about and lose the Christmas pounds.
Off yo read the review of ‘your’ book

Dog is definitely not a fan of having a vet in the family as she is always bringing home the latest wisdom on what is bad for him; it starts with chocolate and then apple cores and now onions and garlic (in the gravies)… that said, if she’s still in her scrubs the smells are out of this world. So we will not mention treats at all as they get a serious frown. Congrats on the great review too. Well deserved…

Oh, boy, Ani! The vet told me I need to loose weight too. Told Mom to cut down on the treats! Geez, next will be walk faster, and cut down on the “sniffs & pee” spots. Not fair, right Ani! 🐶 Sammy (Charley too) 🐶

It’s hard to enjoy the holidays without putting a few extra pounds on. A little rationing and more exercise and it’ll be easy bathing once again! 😉

  21. You don’t have to take that from her! My mom once pointed out to dad that I was getting a bit ROTUND … I think that means rounder than long? … and he said I am perfect JUST the way I am, so there. I think you are perfect too. Demand your treats! Stay perfect! Mom promised to let me read your book if she can find a copy somewhere. We’ll see!

  27. We’ve been on diets since the sparkly stuff they put up last month all came down last weekend, Ani. Of course, they never told us it was diet food, but we knew straight away. However, we just did a bit more running along the beach and then coming back and making ourselves look very tired and the diet food was soon put away. These two-legs are so easy to have the sheep’s fur pulled over their eyes don’t you think? Don’t tell the one who hits the keyboard thingy a lot that we left a comment here. He likes leaving comments, but some are for our eyes only. 👀
    Lots of barks,
