I leave my dog curled up in bed,
I say goodnight and stroke her head.
The bed she’s carried to the hall
To guard my door (and guard her ball)
So all night long, I’ll know she’s there
And I can sleep without a care.
All sweet and good, I hear you say,
But when I rise at break of day
There is no Ani in her bed
She’s in the living room instead.
No longer does she guard my door…
My sofa cushions, on the floor,
All rearranged and neatly placed
With elegantly chosen taste,
Are now a nest for canine dreams
Where she can hatch her cunning schemes.
And every morning, it’s the same,
Perhaps it is some kind of game?
“Oh no, dear writer”, says the dog,
“I guard the garden from the fog,
From foxes, mice and other things
And guard the little bird that brings
The sun from over yonder hill
To light the golden daffodil.”
And with such limpid eloquence
And eyes that speak of innocence
There isn’t much left I can say
So once again, she wins the day.
I love this post ♥

Lovely! And at least she does you the courtesy of making you feel safe when you go to bed before she attends to her other guard duties.

Our dogs do much the same. They guard us from wicked other dogs, bobcats, raccoons, and every kind of bird. And even from the impressively large coyote that could as easily pop into the yard. But our children keep us safe from all manner of things.
Except rain. Rain is not their problem. It’s definitely OURS ❤

Ani avoids rain…. unless there is a leash involved, then she’ll happily go out in a monsoon.

Oakley stands guard and learns while I fall asleep to a documentary, at the side of my bed, on the floor – then, should I awaken when the neighborhood artist is awake and utilizing tools for his art, in the dark of the night – she is stretched out, guarding the main entry – should I awaken at 5, start the coffee pot, and decide to return to bed, for a just a tad longer, she is already stretched out on the floor under my desk, pre-warming the floor for toasty toes warm from bed, when I finally do get there. When the day starts – we do our “dog yoga’ stretch together – she watches the coffee come out, listens to me muttering as I walk through the ‘to-do today list’ – yawns and says, “I’m going out to watch for that cat I hate – he’s about due to cross our place back from his midnight cattin’ -” and pads out the door – – LOL

Ani, you’re such a good guard dog! Your two-legged sleeps safely! Who knows what those horrible things in the garden might do! I have a choice of three beds next to my two legged’s bed – a pillow, a soft, round cat bed and a square dog bed. Like you, I prefer the pillow. Dogs rule!

I’d sleep outside if she’s let me… but she won’t ’cause there are too many things I might need to bark at, Angel 😉 xxx
