Alethea Kehas Meets Darlene Foster on A Better World of Books

Reblogged from The Light Behind the Story:

thDarlene Foster is a writer of children’s stories, a retired employment counsellor, an ESL tutor, a wife, mother and grandmother. Her grandson once gave her the nickname “super-mega-woman-supreme.” Darlene was brought up on a ranch near Medicine Hat, Alberta, where she dreamt of traveling the world and meeting interesting people. Her book series for children follows the heroine Amanda Ross as she travels throughout the world and learns the history and culture of faraway places.

Darlene, thank you so much for being a guest on “A Better World of Books!” Please tells us a little about the inspiration for your character Amanda Ross.

Amanda Ross is the twelve-year-old I would have liked to be. I had a wonderful rural upbringing but my world was limited and I was bored. My grade three teacher taught us about faraway places which sparked my interest in traveling the world and experiencing these places myself. Much later, as an adult, I took a trip to the United Arab Emirates and was fascinated by the culture, the people, the landscape and the food. I thought about how I would have felt if I had visited such an amazing place as a young person and began to write a story from the point of view of a twelve-year-old. Children view the world from a different perspective. Everything is fresh, new, and exciting. They are not yet jaded. Oh, to be a child again! For me, writing books for children, and the young at heart, is the next best thing.

Whitby Weekend: Mysteries in stone

Illustration of how Lythe churchyard may have looked in the tenth century.Photo: information board at St Oswald’s, Lythe

It seems rather unfair to call the displayed Viking and medieval stones ‘the best bit’ of St Oswald’s church in Lythe, but in terms of excitement… and for me, at least… they were. I had seen them before…but once is never enough and photographs, of which I have many, are just not the same as being there. So, having done my duty by paying attention to the rest of the church… even if the Tobias window didn’t register… I wandered up to the west end and the display area, passing the medieval stone coffin on the way, complete with its rather practical drainage hole. ( I won’t say ‘for the juices’ because that never seems to go down very well…).

As I mentioned in a previous post, the church here is an old one and there are fragments of carved medieval masonry preserved within the church, the most interesting of which is a rather splendid Green Man. There are three main types of Green Man, or ‘foliate masks’ found in medieval architecture. Some, the ‘foliate heads’, are faces appearing through vegetation. The ‘bloodsucker head’ is the kind where leaves and vines grow from eyes, nose and mouth. Because the vegetation appears to be growing from his mouth, the Lythe mask is, I believe, of a type known as a ‘disgorging head’.

At first glance, it seems a pagan symbol, suggestion fertility and the natural cycles of growth, and yet they are found in even the most decorous of churches. Christianity explains the symbolism in terms of spiritual rebirth and renewal and therefore it becomes a symbol of the resurrection. I have wondered too whether it shows, even in Christian terms, the natural cycle of ‘earth to earth’, where death gives only our flesh back to be taken into the earth, ‘rendering unto Caesar’ what belongs to this realm while what belongs to other realms returns home.

Also medieval, from around the twelfth century, is a rather curious fragment of a tympanum that would once have graced the arch over the church door. Many of the tympanums we have seen seem to incorporate scenes from mythology or pre-Christian tales, though that might simply be that we have lost the keys to unlocking the symbolism they contain since literacy took away the need to understand these images.

I heard the drums.

We both said in unison, “That’s Fox!”

“What’s Fox?” said Gary.

“You’ll see.”

For Ani’s Advent Calendar

Kathy Lauren Miller's avatarKathy Lauren Miller

Though I may not have a tail,

I do have a tale to tell

It’s fur Ani’s Advent Calendar, and well

I think that’s swell.

So here’ my story to tell:

Once upon a Christmas night

beneath a tree so bright

there was an unexpected sight

that gave me quite a fright

between and betwixt

a mound of ribbon and bows

there arose, a button nose

and a pinkish tongue

that quite suddenly, sprung

into my arms . . .

she was brown and white

and such a delight

I named her Wiggles

because she made me giggle

I knew one day

she would go away

yet, even after all these years

she still remains

that sweet little doggy

who stole my heart

Chill ~ Willow Willers #writephoto

After the noise of the battle earlier the silence cut like a knife. The snow was doing a good job of covering the dead and dying. From nowhere came silver rays from the sun bathing the valley in an almost gentle way.

It seemed almost impossible that only at dawn she had stood on the horizon looking toward the castle wondering what was to come. There had been no snow or cold when she had arrived. The witches still held sway over the climate around the castle. Yet as she had stood in the early morning warmth wondering about her future she had felt the temperature drop and seen the white of the Vampire winter approaching.

Ani’s Advent 2019! Getting it right… and a poem from Willow

Dear Santa,

I’ve been thinking. I know you always bring me new toys and treats, but …and don’t tell her this… I prob’ly get more than enough treats all year and my toy box is overflowing.  I’ve still got loads of brand new balls left from my tennis ball tree. And there’s lots of four-legses and two-legses who have none at all.

I don’t mind if you give them mine.

She told me about one Christmas when she was left alone with my boys who were very little. They wouldn’t have had any presents or any nice food if it hadn’t been for the Salvation Army knocking on her door and delivering a Christmas. She knew they were too young to notice, but she knew and it was breaking her heart. That knock on the door changed everything and my boys smiles on Christmas morning was her Christmas present that year.

Everyone needs a little help now and then…and sometimes a lot of help.  She told me too about a time when she had nowhere to go. She told me how scary it was out there at night and how cold. Now, I like being outside in the dark… but it is different if there is only a curtain between you and a nice, warm sofa.

So, if you want to share my stuff with any other dogs who don’t have nice, warm sofas or someone to cuddle, that’s okay.

And Ruby’s mum, Willow has something to say about that too…

Much love, Ani xxx

From Willow

Christmas is drawing near.
Tinsel, fairies, Santa’s everywhere, tiny lights twinkle.
Hurry past her, close your eyes, tell yourself she’s okay
It is so easy to believe, convenient lies and hope she will go away.
Don’t give her a second thought.
What were the circumstances that, her to this corner brought.
How old is she? she does look young.
But some of them play on that they work in gangs….Scum.
She does look cold, she needs a coat.
She looks so hungry and tired. Is that a lump in your throat?
There are lots of souls like her around,
Sleeping in doorways and cardboard boxes in our cities and our towns.
Should you give her your coat or your change, buy her a hot drink
You don’t want her to spend it on booze or drugs help her out, don’t you think?
This dilemma makes you feel sad well what can I say life can be bad!
She might be an angel she might be just be lost.
But if you just helped her would that be too high a cost.
So spare a thought as you gather round your Christmas tree.
With your Christmas treats for all your family,
For all those who are lost, sad, lonely, cold or in pain.
If you gave to a homeless charity you would not loose, just think of what you could gain

About Willow Willers

I am the mum of three boys all now grown and flown to live their own lives. Luckily they do keep in touch and visit often. I now have two beautiful grandsons.

When I started this blog I had not long come home from the hospital after an accident in which I broke my back. I was in the hospital for a month and had three operations.

It has taken me a long time to recover, I am still recovering but every day my body is getting stronger. It has taken a huge toll on me mentally I had to retire early on health grounds, I had to come to terms with finding out people I thought were friends were not. I had to make a new life for myself. Things I could do easily have become difficult.

Writing poetry and prose has helped me a great deal, in fact, I think it has saved my life.
