Excerpt from Silent Payback: David
This was my cue to lay all my cards on the table, spill the beans or come clean, but whatever I called it, my mouth didn’t want to open. I was at a crossroads and whatever happened now would probably change my life forever. That was when the voice in my head woke up again.
What are you worrying about? You have no life, and you are an even bigger fool if you think you might magically get one now.
‘David, I thought we could talk about this before turning our attention to the case in hand. If there is anything that might get in the way of that, I would like to know about it now.’
I knew it was no good trying to pretend I hadn’t reached the point of no return. I had to tell Snow something, so taking my courage in both hands, I filled him in on the bare facts of my problem. I didn’t elaborate on what my hormone imbalance had done to me in the past, or how it was likely to affect me in the future. I hoped to be convincing enough to at least keep my job. Whether I could keep my position on this case was another matter entirely, as I could tell Snow was itching to take over and would no doubt have something to say about it.
When I finished talking, Snow’s face gave no clue as to what he might be thinking. I waited, holding my breath, dreading what the big man would say. Snow finished drinking his coffee and dropped the container in the bin. It landed with an ominous thud.
‘Now, this treatment of yours, how often do you think you will need to be absent?’
There it was. The million-dollar question.
How I answered might make the difference between remaining a detective or becoming a nobody again. ‘At the moment, the jury is still out, as I haven’t had the results yet. I don’t expect to be missing much. Hopefully, all it will entail is a change in medication…’
‘And will you be fit for duty while all this is going on?’
I nodded. I couldn’t bring myself to say the words that would almost certainly be a lie. If I wanted to keep my job, I would have to convince myself of the lie too.

About the Author
Jaye Marie is affectionately known as the giant redwood, probably because she is very tall, but also because of her love for trees. Most afternoons she can be found repotting or taking care of her bonsai collection, but her love of detective mysteries soon brings her back indoors. She has written three fiction novels in this genre, Nine Lives, Out of Time and Crossfire and is looking forward to publishing Silent Payback, her fourth book.
She spends any free time learning everything she can about self-publishing, and despite all the obstacles, she never gives up on anything and is as stubborn as a mule. She also shares a website with Anita Dawes…

People around her are dying at the hands of a serial killer, has Kate run out of lives?
Will she find a reason to live before it is too late?
“If you like the thriller genre that keeps up the momentum then The Ninth Life would be a good read for you. The pace never falters, building up the plot and characters with timely intervention. The author cleverly keeps the story centred around the main character, with the other players coming into the story and yet there are no plot holes or false timings.” Amazon Reviewer
“The story is very mysterious and suspenseful, and I was left wondering if Kate would escape the murderer. The mysterious voice plays a big part in the story and the ending does a wonderful job of explaining the voice and it’s purpose in Kate’s life.” Amazon Reviewer
“An addictive and rollercoaster of a read” Louise Wyatt
Kate Devereau has survived the brutal attack on her life, but cannot speak or move. Her brain has shut down, refusing to remember the horror of what happened to her.
Slowly, her mind and body mend, revealing a nightmare she knows will become worse before it can get better.
Can she survive another attack and restart her life?
This is the light-hearted and hopefully inspiring story of my battle with breast cancer… written to help women just like me, all over the world…
“I called the story “Apple Blossom” because that is the abiding memory of my time at the hospital. In the radiotherapy room, above the treatment table, some of the ceiling tiles had been replaced with illuminated pictures of apple blossom against a blue summer sky. In the darkness of that room, I stared at those images every day for three weeks, desperately trying to remain calm and as peaceful as I could manage.
Even now, months later, I cannot look at apple blossom without remembering how alone I felt, but also how lucky I was…”
