Subject-Verb Agreement ~ Nicholas C. Rossis

Reblogged from Nicholas C. Rossis :

The other day, I was writing an answer in Quora. “Vitamins are essential for our body,” I wanted to say. Then, I paused. Should it be, “…for our bodies”?

My previous post explored the difference between historic and historical. Today’s post continues on the same trend, dealing with another curveball grammar throws us: subject-verb agreement. We have Sumita Tah to thank for the detailed explanation and examples that clear away this confusing issue.

Subject-Verb Agreement

Grammar | From the blog of Nicholas C. Rossis, author of science fiction, the Pearseus epic fantasy series and children's books

Verb must agree with its Subject in Number and Person. A singular subject takes a singular verb. A plural subject takes a plural verb. So, how does this work in practice? Here are the rules.

Still ~ Alethea Kehas #writephoto

The body, subject to the mind,

reaches for more, grabbing at an illusion

never realized. It seeks to be sustained by want

collecting treasures to adorn it.

False garments of the self dim the light inside.

Burn, Burn, Burn…

*

Man was always chasing Hare

but Hare was usually too swift for him…

*

One day, by means of a fluke, Man caught Hare,

“Now, I’ve got you,” said Man and he tied Hare to a tree,

then he set off to look for kindling…

Still ~ Iain Kelly #writephoto

A glorious morning. Clear blue sky, the water still, the grass fresh. It was exactly the sort of scene that had convinced them to buy the house.

But the spring colours and sun-kissed fields hid the tumult of the previous night. The storm had raged across the whole country for twenty four hours. The deluge of rain had centred on them.

They had prayed the water level would cease to rise. The river had burst its banks in the early evening.  It hadn’t stopped there. It kept rising. It had swamped their garden wall, their flowerbeds and lawn disappearing under the brown waves that crept closer to their back door.

The Small Dog gets muddy…

There’s muddy pawprints everywhere

Because of all the flooding…

In spite of doing all I can

I’m always traipsing mud in.

*

She says I’m more important

Than her rug or reputation…

I’m glad of that assurance

Given all the devastation…

*

She says it’s not my fault

My feet are furry and collect it…

And put a blanket down

Upon my sofa to protect it…

*

She says she’s glad we’ve just a rug

And hard floors all the rage…

Not wall to wall Axminster

In a dodgy shade of beige.

*

She says her knees are aching

With the scrubbing she’s being doing…

And that, if I’m not careful,

That I too will need shampooing!

*

But if she says she’s bathing me

Just ‘cause I brought outside in…

I’ll dig a hole beneath the fence

And find a den to hide in!

Time ~ Kitty #writephoto

Your tales,

of woe, songs of,

love, esteem for beauty,

small fights, witness to this and more,

I’m time.
