Hello to everyone and thanks to Sue for hosting me today. It’s a pleasure to be here. As an author, I’m also a reader and I’ve enjoyed many books over the years. I have some fond memories of reading at various points in my life, most likely because I needed an escape or distraction at the time.

One such time, for whatever reason was a Christmas holiday when I sat down to read Patricia McKillip’s Heir of Sea and Fire which is the second book of her Riddle-master of Hed trilogy. The book was new and I had enjoyed the first book of the series immensely so I was ready to read this new one.

It was a cold time of year even for Alabama where I grew up and so we had a fire crackling in the fireplace most every night. The fire made for a nice setting by which to read, especially late at night. I could turn out most of the lights in the room and read mostly by the glow of the warm fire.

The characters traveled and the fire added to the effect of reading about them at their own campfires. For several nights, I just soaked in both the glow of the fire and wonderful tale between the covers.

For whatever reason, that time of reading has stuck in my mind over the years. It was a time of transition for me as a young man and just being able to sit quietly and read for several nights had a positive impact on me. I suppose this is the case for us all as we need time to process life and an engrossing story allows us to do just that all too often. Likewise, there’s something about being by a fire and reading – or hearing – an entertaining story told.

I still read a lot today and I’ve found that fiction helps take me away from all the stresses and challenges of the day and I’m sure it does for everyone who takes time to read. I know many people enjoy swapping stories and such around a campfire and that’s been the case for thousands of years. I think a good fire sets a mood in us all to settle down and read or listen to a story. I still like to read at the fireplace today.
