Guardian ~ Willow Willers #writephoto

They had always been there or so everyone thought. Their faces weather beaten and sun dried over millennia. They guarded the shores, they kept us safe, even now when foolish people dismissed them as “just rock formations”. They stayed steadfast and watched over the seas and us.

No one ever really noticed that unlike most of the coast line these Guardian Rocks did not erode, they did not fall into the sea. Nor did they recede like those around them, no they grew in number. More faces joined them each time there was a threat. They had seen invasion people walking across long gone land, then came the sea then men in boats. They stood and watched, then came sturdier boats, then Balloons then planes, bombs, shells.

The Small Dog’s moral judgement…

My two-legs came home soggy though it’s pretty hot outside.

She must have gotten really wet or else she would have dried.

I asked her what had happened to land her in such a state…

“A fish!” she said… I wondered just what she’d had on her plate!

*

“The sturgeon!” she informed me, and I thought she’d lost the plot.

I felt the laughter rising but I thought I’d better not…

Because I know the sturgeon and the plate where he’d belong

Would have to be a BIG one and at least a metre long!

*

But would she really eat him? After all, he is a friend…

I’d hate to see our friendship come to such a sticky end!

“Oh, don’t be daft, my girlie, he just got me with his tail…

And I’m as wet as if someone had drenched me with a pail!”

Guardian ~ Honoré Dupuis #writephoto

I am waiting. I know you will come, when does not matter to me: I am old, and patient.

When you arrive, I will be ready. Maybe, by then, you will be wiser. If not, woe to you.

You may think that, after those eons, I should have forgotten. Poor you. I forget nothing, ever.

Afghanistan Adventures #36 Will we ever get to Lal? ~ Mary Smith

Reblogged from MarySmith’sPlace:

Autumn 1989

In the morning, our breath escaped in great clouds of steam. The mountains to the north were topped by white snow caps, glistening in the early sunshine. With no sounds from other travellers to disturb us we had slept late and it was after eight o’clock before Khudadad, went in search of transport.

I watched a donkey train being led into the compound. Two very young ones frisked around playfully, kicking their heels and nipping at the necks of the older donkeys. They bore this abuse stoically before suddenly nipping back, in a far from playful fashion.

the sea is a sudden urge,
a transient heaviness,
a momentary gravity,
to hold the human soul

Quis ut Deus? ~ Stuart France

‘Am I more like God than you because I am stronger?’

… It was, it seems, the Romans, that most militaristic of empire building peoples

who first insisted that St Michael should be seen, that is, depicted,

in a military light, the Commander-in-Chief of an ‘Army of Angels’, as it were.

After Constantine’s defeat of Licineus at the Battle of Adrianople AD 324

which the Emperor attributed to the Archangel Michael he had a painting

of the Saint slaying a Dragon commisioned for the Michaelion,

a Christian Sanctuary nearby, which was previously dedicated to healing waters.

The Guardian ~ Iain Kelly #writephoto

The minister finished the eulogy. Quiet, soft piano music faded up and filled the hush. A low electronic hum started, the wheels of the conveyor gradually turning.

He was supposed to have protected him. That was his job, to be the rock, the guardian against all that the world could throw at them. He had failed.

He stood up and managed to control his shaking legs. He could hear the whispers and pitiful mutterings behind him as he stepped forward.

Life ~ Aseem Rastogi #writephoto

They sat there on the rocky outcrop wondering how their lives had changed. They both had rough childhoods and their notion of happiness was just to make more money and move out of their dingy homes.

Little did they know that more than a decade later they would have a house by the sea
