Photo prompt round up – Wings #writephoto

The photo for this week’s prompt was taken from my back doorstep. The multitude of bids came over, wheeling and calling… a black and vociferous crowd that stayed overhead for a good ten minutes. There were far too many to capture in a single shot, but even in the one I chose for the prompt, you can just about see the reason for their clamour… At the extreme top left of the shot is a red kite.

A pair of them were hunting overhead and prompted the defensive swarm. The black birds cried…all of them. Some sounded like newborn babies, others almost like dogs barking. The noise of voice and wing was incredible.

At first, I thought it was a murder of crows… but in fact it was a clattering of jackdaws… and the collective noun is apt! Although their mobbing of the kites pleases me not at all, as I hold the kites in a special place in my heart,  I do love these birds too for their intellect, agility and what often appears to be a sense of humour…

If you have written a piece for this week’s challenge and it does not appear below, please leave a link in the comments and I will add it to the list. Pingbacks ado not always get through.

As always there were some superb contributions this week and I would like to thank  everyone who took part. Please click on the links below to visit all the posts and leave a comment for the author! A new prompt will be published later today and I will reblog as many as I can through the week as they come in and all contributions will be featured in the round-up on Thursday.

Come and join in!
