The drums beat louder, flames leap high
As Foxes roam the night

Burning brands dance in the dark
and in the blood burn bright

The watchers, clustered round the lawn
By firelight are revealed

The Silver Fox will cast the spell
To see the winter healed

Dogs, white as winter’s bones, contend
With Foxes red as flame

With every step and beating drum
To win the moonlit game.

The Dogs dance for the long, cold dark…
The Fox for spring’s return…

The battle dances to and fro
And still the fires burn…

But when the Young Fox, proud and tall
Emerges on the field,

The old Dog, to his majesty
Must bow the head and yield.

And then the Foxes rule the night
And on the dancing floor

They celebrate the victory
And spring will come once more.

The Foxes do not know defeat
They serve only the light

And when cold winter’s fate in sealed
They melt into the night.

Where do they come from? They come out of the night…
Where do they go to? Back to the night they return…

They dance in the dark to pipe and drum and fiddle
They dance in the dark with fire and brandished flame…
No-one knows who they are

Stuart and I would like to thank Charles James Fox and the Foxes for a fantastic year and the unforgettable privilege we were accorded in April.

I guess the old year always does feel like a tired, old dog and usually we are the foxes celebrating its end.
