The battle for winter

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-125

The drums beat louder, flames leap high
As Foxes roam the night

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-132

Burning brands dance in the dark
and in the blood burn bright

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-141

The watchers, clustered round the lawn
By firelight are revealed

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-163

The Silver Fox will cast the spell
To see the winter healed

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-203

Dogs, white as winter’s bones, contend
With Foxes red as flame

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-198

With every step and beating drum
To win the moonlit game.

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-307

The Dogs dance for the long, cold dark…
The Fox for spring’s return…

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-334

The battle dances to and fro
And still the fires burn…

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-373

But when the Young Fox, proud and tall
Emerges on the field,

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-363

The old Dog, to his majesty
Must bow the head and yield.

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-453

And then the Foxes rule the night
And on the dancing floor

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-426

They celebrate the victory
And spring will come once more.

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-439

The Foxes do not know defeat
They serve only the light

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-363

And when cold winter’s fate in sealed
They melt into the night.

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-528

Where do they come from? They come out of the night…
Where do they go to? Back to the night they return…

fox-hunters-moon-2016-hordrons-peacock-001-533
They dance in the dark to pipe and drum and fiddle
They dance in the dark with fire and brandished flame…
No-one knows who they are

Stuart and I would like to thank Charles James Fox and the Foxes for a fantastic year and the unforgettable privilege we were accorded in April.

I guess the old year always does feel like a tired, old dog and usually we are the foxes celebrating its end.
