Ani’s Advent – Inside out

Dear Santa,

Just so you don’t think I’m throwing poems at you just to get presents, I thought I’d write you a proper letter. Mainly because I know you sort of know everything about everyone. So I thought you might be able to answer me something.

balls 011You’re not human, are you? I mean, that’s not the question, but I wouldn’t want to offend you, being so near to Christmas and all. You can’t be, because you are always smiling and human two-legses don’t smile that much. Well, why don’t they?

I know they are weird and all that… they have some really strange habits and even weirder ideas. They even think it is weird to be weird. You know, sort of different. Yet, you’re weird… and they love you! And get this… even the ones who don’t believe in you love you!

And me, a small dog, I’m supposed to make sense of that.

You are always smiling, you are always doing nice things for people…you read all the letters and always have time to really listen to everyone that talks to you. Everybody recognises you straight away.. yet you have so many different faces! I was wondering about that, you know, and I decided it must be because of your clothes.

Anyone can do the ‘ho, ho, ho’ thing… or dress up and pretend… but as soon as they do, it is as if a little part of you is there. It is as if they suddenly become smiley and loving and kind. And that makes other two-legses smiley and kind too.

These two-legs change their clothes all the time. You never do. (I mean, I know the elves and Grandma Claus will do the laundry and such… you must have a wardrobe full of different suits all the same…). It has to be the clothes.

They are cheerful and bright and warm and cosy… and they make you stand out from everyone else so that everyone sees who you really are. And if you are not really a two-legs, then you must be well, a Power… how else could you be everywhere at once? And if you are a Power… and its all about the clothes… then maybe what you are inside is showing on the outside.

I was thinking, maybe the two-legses could do something with that? Instead of getting dressed  every morning to cover up who they are with who they think they should be, maybe they could wear Love and Kindness on the outside too? Sort of putting on a body of Love, like they do their clothes? Most of them have it inside, but they seem to have forgotten how to share it, except with a very few around them. And you are good at sharing too.

I know I’m just a small dog and I don’t really know much… but I get to see these two-legses at their best. They play with me, stroke me, cuddle me and let me know I am loved. They stop minding what they look like or sound like… and we just enjoy the moment.

Yet they aren’t so good at showing their inside selves to each other.  I’m sure they’d be able to smile a lot more if they wore Love on the outside like you. They’d be able to recognise each other properly too…see what is real inside. It seems most of the time they only look at the outside, when all the real stuff is inside.stuffing 002

Anyway, I know you are busy so I won’t keep you.

Much love,

Ani xxx

(P.S. I tried telling her I was dressing up as Santa gone green… but she didn’t believe me…)

P.P.S. Laughter Lines would make a great Christmas gift…

I’m not sure I’ll be allowed to write to Santa after I ate an advent calendar two nights ago. They were very unimpressed with me. What would you do, Ani? Love Mylo.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all be the people our dogs think we are, at least more of the time.

  13. I like your ideas Ani. Like you, I am happy all the time and love cuddles and being made a fuss of. It is a shame our humans can’t be friendly and kind to each other more too!

  14. Gosh Ani – who knew you were such a deep thinker?! I think Santa will love your letter as much as I did.

Can you send a copy to America’s White House too? Some of those coming-up-after-Christmas 2-legses really need to get on board with that “love on the outside” idea – especially that 2-legs with the pursed lips and the red face (he’d *seem* so much nicer, anyway, if he’d put the red on his suit instead).

Mom says the new Big Kahuna Secretaries are all pretty much billionaires, so they COULD give all sorts of great presents to people who have a whole lot less (like the sick and hungry ones, or those soldier 2-legses who don’t have anywhere to live but on the street like homeless dogs). Maybe Mom will let me do another guest post before it’s too late. If she does, I’ll quote YOU as the source.

She thinks those billionaires could actually balance the budget all by themselves (and by raising taxes on other 2-legged billionaires) – whatever that means. I don’t really understand how ANY of them think either – but since I’ve been blogging, I’ve read that some of the 2-legses aren’t even loving to dogs!
    Woof! Tink
