Back when I was a little pup and sniffing round some really interesting boxes in the cupboard under the stairs, the two-legs told me there were Christmas trimmings. Then she told me all about Christmas… and while I was down with the idea of turkey and all the other nice things we might get to eat, I was a bit worried when she mentioned that something called Santa Claws might pay us a visit. She said I would have to be very good if I wanted it to turn out well…
I worried about that all summer, ’cause being good wasn’t all that high on my list of priorities. I did try, but you know, everything is so interesting to a pup! Trouble is, the only Claws I met were on the end of a cat… and, although I had done my best, that hadn’t turned out well at all…
Then there was the whole saga with Ginger, the Tom next door who thought he owned my garden. And the Black Thing that liked to torment me…
The two legs sat me down and gave me a cuddle, and made me understand that not all cats were like Ginger and the Black Thing, and that I had to take all creatures as I found them, regardless of species. I had grown up a bit by then, and, when I started writing my Notes, I met a few cats online who actually seemed quite nice.
Still, by Christmas, I was worried about this Santa Claws and kept my eyes peeled for the first sign of trouble… Apart from anything else, I am s’posed to protect her from invaders, but ‘pparently, this one comes in whatever you do!
It turned out all right though, in the end… The Claws brought me lots of tennis balls, treats and squeaky things… so I decided she must have been right after all, and maybe not all cats were so cattish.
So, when Millie, Alethea Kehas‘ kitten, wrote to me, I sort of understood her confusion on the whole Christmas thing, though she seems to have taken to it quite well. I may have to have words with my two-legs though if she ever considers adopting a cat…
A Letter from Millie the Queen Kitten
Dear Ani,
It’s Millie the Kitten, but you can call me Princess Millie. Heck, forget the “Princess,” let’s skip right to “Queen,” after all that’s what the two-leggeds are calling me. I’m not entirely sure why, but I’ll claim the title.
I’ve only been living in my new house castle for a couple of months, and going from rags to royalty sure has been fine. They say I came from a hoarding case, but I’ve chosen to forget that life was not always easy. You see, it’s a cat’s life, not a dog’s life. Yes, that’s me eating the dog’s food. First come, first served is my motto.
I know that’s a harsh reality for you, Ani, but if you want to keep that cheese for yourself, DO NOT LET YOUR HUMAN ADOPT A CAT FELINE QUEEN! Did I mention my new mom servant wanted to call me Sekhmet? Rather fitting, I think, but Queen Millie will have to do.
Imagine a crown on my head (I do)
So, I’ve heard talk of this thing called Christmas around the house. They keep asking me what I want for it, so I’ve figured out it’s going to be a fabulous occasion (whenever the heck it chooses to arrive), which will be celebrated in my honor. They’ve asked me if I want a real throne (naturally), and have talked about some cozy little house to put on top of this here condo you see me featured in the photo above. I’ve heard if you make a list, some guy called Santa will fly over your house and drop whatever you’ve asked for down the chimney. Not exactly sure how the flying and the chimney part works, but I’ve got me a list going.
I’ve been doing some searching on my servant’s computer while she tries to get work done, and found a few things I’ve decided I cannot live without.
First on the list is this here cat castle, which I intend to put atop my condo. The dog’s house is nice, but she hogs too much of the cushion.
I typed in “cat toys” and found this bundle of joy. Granted the cat model on the left looks like he’s nipped a few too many herbs, but the toys sure look like fun and I could use some more mice to add to my collection.
Finally, if it’s not too much trouble, please ask Santa to throw in a couple of bones for the dogs (I do sort-of love them, and I know they love me too, even if they pretend they don’t). I’ll take the meat packed and cut into 1/4” cubes.
I’m sending this letter to you because I don’t have Santa’s address and I saw on TV he has a dog who pulls his sleigh, so I thought you might be applying for the job this year. Ooops, my mom human-servant tells me that was someone called “The Grinch” and I shouldn’t be putting it in the letter. Since I haven’t yet found a delete button, I’ll just have to say if you’re not pulling the sleigh this year, maybe Santa will throw you a few of those tennis balls you fancy down the chimney. I’ve heard you’re rather nice, for a dog.
Love,
Queen Millie the Kitten

About Millie’s Two-legs
Alethea Kehas is a writer and the owner of Inner Truth Healing. Her first book was a memoir, A Girl Named Truth, an excerpt of which was featured on this blog in March of 2017. He latest work is the first of a new series, Warriors of Light, a magical YA fantasy.
Books by Alethea Kehas
Some mystics believe we choose our name, along with our life’s lessons, before we are born. The name we select becomes our constant guide, helping us to navigate the journey ahead. In her memoir, A Girl Named Truth, Alethea explores the subjective nature of truth while she untangles the uncomfortable wrap of narratives she was raised on. Her name serves as her beacon, guiding her to heal and find the inner voice of her own truth. The author’s story begins with her formative years, when her mother left her father and went into hiding with the Hare Krishnas. Months later, the young Alethea finds herself living 3,000 miles away from her extended family, trying to love a new father and forget the one she has left behind. Only she never forgets… A Girl Named Truth is a story of loss, love and the redemptive power of awakening a silenced voice.
”Warriors of Light: The Labyrinth
Book One of the Warriors of Light Series
Within the realm of night, six teens are brought into a mysterious labyrinth that is plagued by darkness. They have been told they are the chosen warriors who have been tasked to repair the network of light within Earth. An impossible mission that only becomes possible after they discover the gifts that reside within their shadow selves. Gifts that can only be unlocked by traveling the maze of light that is as much outside of them as it is inside of them.

An Invitation from the Small Dog
If you would like to help Ani make her advent calendar this year, send your letters to Santa, festive memories, short stories, flash fiction or poems to the Small Dog. She will post them every day through December until Christmas…and there are still spaces left!
She would especially like to hear from her four-legged or feathered friends (she has a special place very close to her heart for turkeys)… but she says that two-legs are better than none, so she will accept submissions from humans too.
To get in touch, please use the form on the contact page or email Ani at findme@scvincent.com
Enjoyed the ‘Goldilocks’ moment… 😉

I’ve not had much to do with cats. But this one seems nice… I hope she gets all she hopes for whenever this Christmas thing shows up (my humans seem to think it’s pretty soon).
Lots of licks,
Lilie

Aw. What a lovely read. The puppy photos of Ani are adorable, and Millie’s letter is the cutest thing I’ve read in days. I’m sure both of them are going to get exactly what they deserve from Santa Claws – toys, of course, but even more love. 🙂

Thank you, Diana. I’m glad you liked my letter. Hopefully Santa will too and I will get those cat nip mice I am pining for. Mom says I don’t need any more energy-boosters, but she’s not Santa. 😉 ❤ Millie

Queen Millie is just the sort of cat I could use for my consort, Ani. After all I am Emperor Garfield, lord of all I view. I have now trained my loyal subjects to cater to my every whim and all I have to do is sit in their laps and purr – and maybe give them an occasional lick.
Thanks for the intro. I think I will have to write her.

Hello, Emperor Garfield. It’s an honor to meet another feline of royal descent. It sounds like you have it all figured out with your human subjects, and that assures me that Santa will give you all that you ask for this Christmas. I would love to hear from you. We royalty must stick together. ❤ Queen Millie. P.S. Do include a photo of yourself. 🙂

Dear Ani, Thank you so much for sharing my letter. I have to admit I let a few squeaks escape when I saw those photos of you as a young pup. You were rather cute. I feel sure we would have been great friends if we were neighbors. Those cats wandering around your yard sound like they are not of royal blood, therefore I can see why you might want to chase them away. ❤ Queen Millie

They seemed to want to chase me away… and I wasn’t about to let them, Millie! The two-legs says she would get me a kitten if she could… I like babies of all kinds… but Big Cats tat don’t have any manners still get chased away… usually through glass though ( she has no sense of what is proper for a dog, you know. These two-legses need educatng…:) ) xxx

I do feel you’d love a kitten too, but sometimes it’s also nice to be the main pet of the house. ❤ P.S. I agree there's a lot to teach the humans. They are not as smart as they think they are 😉

What a delightful read!
I am stuck, I mean, lucky enough to have two cats who live with me… one is old and grumpy and he meows at me every time I pass too close to him. You’d think Fluffy would be used to me by now. I mean, I’ve lived here for 9 years already…
As for the other cat, Moondust, she thinks I’m her toy to rub up against and lick. I let her do her thing, she doesn’t take over my bed or anything like that so, we’re good.
Good luck with the calendar!

What a lovely letter you got from that Queen cat Millie, Ani. I’m not sure why, but the local cats don’t seem to like us despite us wagging our tails and wanting to go and say hello. Austin has even offered them a tennis ball, but it has not worked. Maybe we should courtesy first before saying hello?
As for pulling Santa’s sleigh, if you’re looking for volunteers, we’re up for it.
Lots of barks,
Toby and Austin.
