From a distance, it looks like a house of some description, but get closer and you could see it was a stone.
Look closer still, and it was not just any stone.
It seemed to be alive.
Each face, and that is in a literal sense, had a unique expression, with eyes that seemed to follow the onlooker. Whether it was intended to be the four points of the compass or due to erosion of the elements, no-one was sure.
The curious thing was there were no other stones nearby. No cliffs, no rock formations, just heathland with its colourful carpet of gorse and lavender, and the scuttling sound of creatures taking shelter in crevices and cracks to escape the summer heat.
Kids would fantasize about space ships and aliens whereas adults would weave tales of sacrifice and worship.
