Fear…

Fear is a shadow
Stark as unreality
A seductive snare
Refusing its perspective
I choose to live in the light

I wrote a very similar poem last month, which seems to fit the theme of the day: hope and light.

    Fear

It’s that other thing with wings
in the belfry, hanging like a pendulum
in the pit of the stomach, just a rustle,
harder to face than a full-blown roar,
whispering, a little stone in the shoe
upsetting our balance just a bit, hidden
because we have to hide it,
    even from ourselves, feeding
    on darkness and secrets, nibbling
at the corners of our thoughts.
It’s the creaking of a closed door,
a quick shadow past the window,
    creeping ever closer, unstoppable
    until we stand up
    and turn on a light.

Excellent analogy, Sue. It is the light that draws us closer always. ❤

How perceptive that you describe fear as “seductive” here. On the surface, most people would say that they “hate fear.” But as with worry and regret, there is a sort of siren song that draws people in, enticing them to feed its insatiable appetite, even as they are consumed.

Fear in balance serves a place. Fear that doesn’t lead to action, however, is just a drain on precious resources of soul.

Being in a state of fear can be a security blanket…it is familiar and therefore comfortable, even when unpleasant. Stepping away from unfounded fears is as liberating as taking action because of justified fear.
