Since I talk to both my cat and my dog (and the cat ‘chats’ back to me) each day, I must agree with this article. I know neither of them probably understand more than a few words (go pee, no) but the tone of the voice is important and when I’m alone I like to chatter.

I talk to most things… and a surprising number of them seem to understand …at least tone and intent…

ALL of my Shih Tzus through the years have had huge vocabularies since I chatter incessantly (no surprise, huh?) – and almost always speak to dogs in complete sentences. Tink may be the smartest of the bunch. I am always amazed at what he understands – and how quickly he picks things up – but it could be because he is my first “only dog.”
btw – I’ll be away from Sunday nite until Thursday, and only partially available online between now and then to have time to do what I must before I leave. Tink is coming with me, but I’m not sure he understands what that means since this is my first trip of any sort since he arrived. I’m sure he’ll love where we are going – a cabin in the woods!
Fingers crossed that all goes well with the hospital reports, Sue.
