I know the score… I know the signs… there’s no way she’ll decieve me,
She’s running round and packing bags, which means she’s going to leave me.
She wanders way too often for my liking, I must say,
Sometimes she’s hardly here for long before she’s on her way.
*
“But, girlie, I must go to work, to earn our daily bread.”
I wish that she’d stay home and just play ball with me instead.
“We cannot,” she will frown and say, “do everything we please.
Unless I go to work, there’ll be no tennis balls or cheese.”
*
Well, okay then, that part I get…I don’t mind telling you
I’ll let her off for working, ’cause it covers chicken too.
But what about the times she loads the bags into the car?
You don’t need tons of suitcases if you’re not going far…
*
“I never take more than one bag or pack a ton of stuff!”
She interjects and waltzes off, as if she’s in a huff…
To pack another set of bags, so just what is she at?
‘Cause, if she’s only off to work…then I must be a cat!
*
She stops a while and comes across to snuggle up with me,
She strokes my ears, I sigh and lay my head upon her knee.
My peace will soon be shattered though, my days look awful bleak…
“Don’t worry girlie, I’ll be home in no more than a week.”
*
Did I just hear the words aright? Did I hear what she said?
A week? A lot can happen then! I might even get dead!
The hoover monster might wake up and chase me down the hall!
The kites might come and get me, or at least my special ball!
*
“But you’ll be fine,” she laughs at me, “For you can go and stay
With all your favourite doggie friends where you can run and play.”
She doesn’t understand! That’s not the point! No, not at all!
‘Cause none of my four-legged friends can really throw a ball!
*
“I won’t be long,” she’ll tell me as she’s walking out the door…
I won’t be long? Yeah right…and I have heard that one before!
You know though, there is something worse…and even though she’s mean
I won’t be really happy till she’s back from where she’s been.
*
Editor’s note: She got chicken as compensation 😉
Don’t worry Ani. She’ll be back soon!!!

Oh how I understand this,
from every point of view.
We see those eyes most every day
In horsey face times two.
And then there are the inside pets
three big dogs and a cat.
When we commence to packing
they know just where it’s at.

I had to laugh, I understand
The guilt they make you feel…
In spite of bribes and cuddle time
To them, it’s a big deal.

Aren’t we smart little poets. You think in rhyme like I do. Not a very popular poetry style. I was in a group of poets for years and was the only dr Seuss type rhythm. My teacher told me to bring one of my essays. They liked them and she told me I was an essayist masquerading as a poet and to join her other writing class. I did. And I lived happily ever after.

Poor Ani. But you’ll have more fun with your doggie friends than travelling in the car to a strange place. And think of the guilt treats when she’s back!

Chicken is always a very big help, though these days, our dogs are crazy about … watermelon. As soon as I open one up they are dancing in the street. Is it just our crazy kids?
Have a great trip!

Oh Ani what a tough life you have. It is clear all you expect is daily ball throwing, food, companionship, a clean couch etc in return for the enormous responsibility of 24 hour guarding and protecting. It seems she does not understand when you are not home you cannot perform your duties. maybe she will slow down a bit or even take you travelling more??
ps your poetry is improving Ani

My cats sympathize with you, Ani. When I drag out a suitcase and start packing, they look at me like I’m a traitor. I tell them I will be home soon and my good friend will visit every day to feed and play with them, but they just give me that sad, accusing stare you are giving your four-legs. Chin up, girlie, she will return to you soon.
