Light ~ Leanne Lieu #writephoto

Dani and Sally went to play at the lake only to find it frozen, so they ran back home and brought their ice skates to the rink. Their pet fox, Pete, tagged along. Dani and Sally laughed as they skated and fell. and got right back up as the sun’s light shone brighter. Pete did fairly well, the girls thought. Maybe it was his sweater that made the difference.

Dani gained speed and did a toe loop and she fell through the ice. She flailed in panic. Sally cried loudly, unable to see her sister’s panic or hear the cracking ice beneath her. In seconds, only bubbles were in Sally’s place. Dani flailed and splashed in greater panic, fearing she would have the same fate.

Book Share: A Comprehensive List ~ Staci Troilo at Story Empire

Reblogged from Story Empire:

Staci Troilo Bio

Ciao, amici! This is my last book share for the year, so I’m going to do something a little different than usual. I’m choosing five books. That’s right, not one, but five. Why? Two reasons:

  1. This might help you choose a holiday gift for friends and/or family (or even yourself).
  2. I want to show my SE family some love.

The Story Empire authors were quite tolerant of me this year. They filled in without a single complaint when I couldn’t be here, and they put up with more rants than I care to admit to having. They also gave me sage advice. Scratch that. They give me sage advice. All the time.

These authors are all talented in their craft and have much industry wisdom to share.

Diarmuid and Grainne: a boar hunt and a tragic love story in Glen Lonan ~ Jo Woolf

Reblogged from The Hazel Tree:

Strontoiller-crop-2 jo woolf

The frost was still crisp on the grass when we ventured across the field in Glen Lonan in search of the Strontoiller stone circle.

It was one of those blissful autumn mornings, so perfect that you know it’s going to be short-lived;  so you try to drink in all the blue sky and inspect every sparkling rime-fringed leaf, while all the time your footsteps are crushing some of the magic beneath them.

We had no problem finding the stones, even though Strontoiller must be one of the least noticeable stone circles I’ve ever seen. It measures about 60 feet in diameter and is made up of 30 or so rounded boulders, all of which are less than waist height. They are all very firmly earth-fast, and some of the lower ones lie hidden beneath dense cushions of grass; only if you push them with your foot can you tell a stone is there.

One Thousand Steps ~ Na’ama Yehuda #writephoto

The snow fell softly in the early hours, blanketing a brittle frost with a bridal veil.

She undid the entrance flap and shivered in the chill. Her thin underclothing was not sufficient for the cold. She retreated back into the shelter to don her clothes, lace her cloak, and pull on her boots.

Still when she emerged from the tent, her breath caught in the frigid air. She welcomed it. She needed her wits about her, today more than most.

Her feet crunched over on the frozen ground as she hurried to relieve herself by a nearby tree. The warmth leaving her body felt palpable. In it there was relief and wariness, both.

Don’t Panic?

“Don’t panic!” says she, with her hands in my fur,
“I am sure they will help.” Well, it’s alright for her!
Cause she isn’t the one who is facing the threat…
And I’ve hardly had any responses as yet!

If I don’t fill my calendar with Santa’s letters
It’s me who’ll be wearing the antler-shaped fetters
While she clicks the camera, up close to my face
And puts the pics out there, all over the place!

So, I’m feeling a little bit down in the dumps
And I’m hoping my furry friends all come up trumps.
And will send in their notes, lend a small dog a paw,
Cause I’ve typed till I don’t think I can any more.

Antlers are for Reindeer!

If you would like to help save Ani from a fate (she says) worse than death, send your Letters to Santa, festive memories, short stories, flash fiction or poems to the Small Dog. She will post them every day through December until Christmas.

She would especially like to hear from her four-legged or feathered friends (she has a special place very close to her heart for turkeys)… but she says that two-legs are better than none, so she will accept submissions from humans too.

To get in touch, please use the form on the contact page or email Ani at findme@scvincent.com

Winter’s Light ~ Alethea Kehas #writephoto

The breath of winter spreads a filigree of ice

upon the hands of trees. She whispers the promise

of eternal love in white. Forget the sun, she tells you

I am here to stay. Lover to darkness, she holds

the power of warmth, forcing the shivering limbs

to layer or retreat. Yet the tree remembers life
