Ani’s Advent Calendar 2018! Accidents, Jennie Fitzkee and Rex the labrador

Mentioning the turkey epsode was a bad idea. It brought back all the memories of my little ‘accidents’ over the years. I pleade ignorance… I was young. How was I to know she wanted the turkey when she just left it laying around? Or the ham on the bone shed just cooked. Granted, the smoked salmon was in the frudge… as was the cheese… but if she wll leave the fridge open for people to help themselves, she can’t complain when they do.

That was a good Christmas! She just laughed… espeially when she realised I’d left my new tennis ball as evidence. That was the real accident on my part!

But, my new pal Rex has a much worse tale to tell. You have to be so careful at Chrismas. Anything can happen…

Dear Ani,
My name is Rex, and I love turkey, too. My two legged and I have the same birthday. I taught her how to walk (her mother was not pleased). We were close. When she was a little girl, she remembers the year of the Christmas turkey.

I’m a black lab, and I love leftovers, especially turkey. Yum! The problem – their problem – was that everything was dark. Christmas dinner was at night, their dining room table was dark wood, their oriental rug was navy blue, and I’m black. I blended right in. There was only candlelight in the dining room for Christmas dinner. I was under the table, out of sight. I was camped out, waiting for my two legged to drop some turkey. Hey, a black dog can hide on a dark rug in a dark room, right?

The moment came. The turkey came into the dining room delivered on a big tray. I just had to come out from under the table and take a look at this beauty. Apparently the big tray blocked the view on the rug. The lady carrying the tray tripped over me, and the turkey went flying across the table and the room. Of course I rushed over to the turkey. It was fine, and tasted oh so delicious.

I was left alone for the rest of the night. Unfortunately they took the remains of the turkey away from me. They were headed to the hospital. Broken leg from tripping over me. Hey, I’m a black dog!

Merry. Christmas, Ani. Keep after the turkey!

Your Friend,
Rex

About Rex’s two-legs:

Jennie Fitzkee has been teaching preschool for over thirty years. This is her passion. She believes that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It’s the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That’s what she writes about.

She is highlighted in the the new edition of Jim Trelease’s bestselling book, “The Read-Aloud Handbook” because of her reading to children. Her class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at both the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, and the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital.

An Invitation from the Small Dog

If you would like to help Ani make her advent calendar this year, send your letters to Santa, festive memories, short stories, flash fiction or poems to the Small Dog. She will post them every day through December until Christmas…and there are still spaces left!

She would especially like to hear from her four-legged or feathered friends (she has a special place very close to her heart for turkeys)… but she says that two-legs are better than none, so she will accept submissions from humans too (and even no-legs if there is the odd literary snake out there…). To get in touch, please use the form on the contact page or email Ani at findme@scvincent.com

Oh dear, Rex. That was quite a turkey event. I bet they’re still talking about it. I haven’t done anything like that but I’m a white dog and can’t hide very well. Dot! bow wow

  6. Not your fault Rex. I’m black too (well, I have some white bits) so it’s hard to see me in the dark. There are little lights that come on in the dark as my eyesight’s not too good now so I can see where I’m going and they can see where I am if they have to get up. Love Maggie xx

  7. Oh my goodness, Jennie, Rex, Sue and Ani, this is some story. Note to self, do not host Christmas dinner in the dark and invite the black dog.

  8. Oh no, Rex. Well, it wasn’t really your fault, since you can’t help being a black dog and you didn’t decide on the rug color or the candlelight. And no one can blame you for not wanting to wast the turkey! So sorry about the lady’s broken leg though. I hope she can laugh about it now. 🙂

  9. It wasn’t your fault Rex. Sorry about the human breaking her leg, but glad you got some turkey out of it. Lots of licks, Lilie

I know…a tennis ball is hard to miss. In the old days they were white. That could have passed for leftover mashed potatoes in the fridge. But a neon green or yellow tennis ball is a dead giveaway. Maybe Ani is colorblind. That could be a good alibi.

Dear Sue, Thanks for posting my letter because I think my story might give Ani more ideas to get treats. Ani just needs to be in stealth mode and avoid tennis balls. I’m rooting for my new friend! Love, Rex.

  16. As the two-legged of two highly trip-overable black dogs, I relate. We keep telling them to smile. Dark eyes, black bodies, and just a bit over ankle high? The perfect size for getting anything that falls from the table and falling over afterward.

Oh, poor Rex. He didn’t mean to make the turkey fall. I’m sure he didn’t.

Oh no! I’m sure you felt bad, Rex that inadvertently you caused a broken leg… I once took a piece of meat off the counter. Never again. That two-legged son, Iain, loves spicy – REALLY spicy – peppers and when I stole that meat, got a piece of pepper. No matter how much water I drank or how many times I licked my chops, that sting stayed. For a long time. Now I sit as close to them as I can until they give in and give me a piece but I don’t take off the counter, no way José
