The Schrödinger effect… to be alive and dead at the same time…. That pretty much sums me up as a writer. Although, if I had to make a judgement call, I would probably err on the side of ‘dead’…or that’s what it feels like, gathering the top ten most-viewed posts of the year.
There is a reason for this. Not counting the various ‘pages’ or the Thursday photo prompt posts, those posts are as follows…
The single most popular individual post was Day One of the Black and White Challenge… just a photo (above), no writing. With 1139 views. Hrmph.
The next, and not far behind, was Notes from a small dog XXX, first published in 2013. I am convinced it is the ‘xxx’ in the title that keeps it coming back…
A touch of tenderness came in third. Yay! At last, I thought, I (not the dog) get to actually write something! Things are finally looking up!
But not for long. The next-ranked post was Dear Wen XXX from Stuart… one of a series of letters ‘Don’ and ‘Wen’ exchanged back in 2015. I’m saying nothing about the ‘xxx’… it is actually a fascinating series.
I’m saying nothing about Notes from a small dog XXXV either, which was the next one, followed by a haiku… I got to write a whole seventeen syllables!
On the other hand, there were no ‘xxx’s in Notes from a small dog: The dotted line…I had to give her that one. But the penultimate post of ‘my’ top ten? Day Seven of the Black and White Challenge… Double hrmph!
I finally sneaked another, properly-written post in right at the end… Imploding reality, which tells something of my son’s story… and seems quite appropriate at this stage of the proceedings, when I could simply sit here, head in hands, in utter despair… “Whatever hand we are dealt by destiny,” I wrote, “how we play our cards remains a choice we can all make for ourselves.”
So… if the dog is going to beat me hands down…again…even with her older posts… Should I throw in the towel? Stop writing? Stick to posting single, black and white photos?
Not on your Nelly.
With over eight thousand posts on the blog, over 268,000 views this year alone, and in 189 countries… for which I thank you from the bottom of my heart… I must be doing something right. Even if it is letting the small dog have the keyboard and tear what little dignity I possess to shreds…
So I won’t rehome the dog, who takes up as much room in ‘my’ top ten as she does in my heart. Nor will I bury the camera… I enjoy being on this end of it too much. While as for ‘Don and Wen’… I have delighted in their adventures and learned far more in their company, than I could possibly begin to say.
Therefore, as 2017 draws to a close, I have only one thing left to say to Mr Schrödinger…
To everyone who has been my guest this year, shared news of their latest book here, written a post for the writephoto challenge, read an article, shared, reblogged, tweeted, laughed and cried with me (and the damned dog)…
Reblogged this on anita dawes and jaye marie.

A wonderful year, Sue, despite the small dog taking over lol. My top ten are mostly travel posts – pretty funny for a blog that was supposed to be about writing… 😀
And happy new years eve to you – looking forward to seeing you in the new year 🙂 I will have a bit more time so perhaps adventure beckons? x

We don’t really have homes, you know. The dogs have home. We manage their home, keep them warm, fed, cared for. We are their people and they are very good to us, aren’t they?

They are… and it wouldn’t be home at all without them.
