Green summer slain
The icy tread of winter
In the ascendent
A dying time beginning
Holding the hope of rebirth
Autumn is in the air. The sun rises through a misty veil and the trees weep withered tears. The child in me recalls the old tale of the kings who contend as the seasons turn. The battle must be true, yet the victor is always known. All things have their season.
This time, it is the turn of the White King of Winter to defeat the Green King of Summer. The land mourns her vanquished verdant lord before wedding the White King. She spreads a pall of jewelled gold across his face. Beneath her shadowed heart, new life begins to grow.

Summer is doing quite well in California even though it’s September. 102F/39C in Santa Cruz today, and yesterday San Francisco had its hottest day ever in recorded history, 160F/41C.

So I heard… too hot for me! It is definitely autumn here though.

Beautiful and mythic, Sue. Summer, here, isn’t quite ready to bow to the coming of the White King, but soon.

Lovely tale, Sue. I wish autumn will be here soon. But actually, there’s no autumn in California. Summer will quickly turn into winter. My maple tree hardly has enough time to change its color.

We have few maples here… but they are glorious in autumn.

When I lived in Portland, Oregon which is 1000 mile north of where I am, I could see distinctive four seasons. My daughter lives there. She knows I missed the four seasons, so she sent me photos of golden leaves trees and snow!!

The seasons slide into each other here, but they are very different. Living in the middle of France for many years, I missed a distinctive winter, so I know what you mean… until the winter where even the mains water pipes froze underground!

Oh, no! That must be really cold. My circulation is not very good, so I tend to stay indoor when it’s too cold. Even though I miss the seasons, the weather here in Southern California is better for me physically!

Back in England, the weather, though often damp, tends to be more temperate.

Does it rain often in England? It was May when we were in London. We visited my husband’s cousin. He has a house on a stretch, an island with six houses on it. He was going to take us out on his boat but it rained very hard, so we didn’t go.

It does rain a fair bit… but then, in return, we get our beautiful green landscape.

I get that when I go to Portland. It rains half a year there. The weed grows as fast as the grass.
