The photograph for this week’s prompt was taken in Scotland, at St Andrews in the ruined Abbey, during our road trip last year. I loved the way the light caught the edges of the grave markers displayed in the crypt and thought it lent a surreal and otherwordly look to the place and it reminded me of an old legend…
The Crypt
There is an isle of spiral stone
Held fast with sea-linked chain
Where those who served are laid to rest
Until they come again.
*
So bright the light they bore in life,
So clear their sight and soul,
That in the faery crypt they sleep
Still incorrupt and whole.
*
Their place upon the Isle of Glass
Was earned through song and deed
And here they wait in silent rest
Till Albion has need.
*
Here lies the once and future king
Within the fabled round,
Brought hence by Queens in woven mist
Until the call shall sound.
*
Walk softly as you tread these halls
Where sleep the brave and best…
For only those who serve the Light
Within its light may rest.
