A five star review of Sword of Destiny

swordspicA modern Arthurian tale

Sue Vincent has crafted a beautiful and evocative tale that initially begins in this world, but slowly unveils the Otherworld. Over the course of the story, the characters encounter all manner of weird and wonderful things, from the mischievous Hielyn to a variety of powerful gods and amazing creatures — and not one, but several, important swords.

The land is a key part of the story, almost a character itself, and Vincent shows a deep appreciation for the natural world in her work. Love is another overarching theme, affecting pretty much every character, but then what Arthurian tale would be complete without a bit of romance?

The novel is largely character-driven, and there are a host of likeable characters throughout, including (to name a few) the protagonist Rhea, the valiant Alec, the playful Jamie and Anna, and, of course, the mysterious Professor Ambrose, who might just be more than he seems. There is certainly a lot of magic to each of these characters, some more than others, and we learn more of their backstories and troubles as the tale progresses.

An enjoyable fantasy adventure that will make you wonder about the possible adventures we all can have in life.
