An uncommon guest
All youthful exuberance
Immature beauty

This gorgeous little creature is a new visitor to the garden. I think he…or she…is a youngster and was intent on checking out the pool in his new home, disappearing into the shallows for a bath without so much as a by-your-leave.

He…or she… might be a siskin…or a greenfinch… or something else entirely…and I’d love to know for sure. I don’t think he has his full colours yet. Just enough to show how beautiful the plumage will be…

he spent a lot of time hovering over the water, as if seeing it for the first time and unsure of what he should do with it. If anyone knows for sure what he is, we’d love to know.
Note: Our UFO appears to be a juvenile goldfinch:)

He looks like he is planning to be something very much like a goldfinch. there is a European Goldfinch, too. They aren’t exactly the same, but similar. The colors are the same.

He wasn’t quite the right shape… though that might be his age. I wondered if he was a greenfinch.

And so unconcerned by our presence too.

I thought about goldfinch, but the beak is wrong, and I don’t think it’s a greenfinch. It could be a young female chaffinch though (Collins Birds of Britain). Beautiful anyway
