Ill-concealed hunter

Predator poised for action

Hiding its defeat

Vanquished by the smallest bird

Boldly defending her young

Wow. Cool. I have witnessed it a time or three, but it’s rare around here. We used to have nine hens And we always knew when the Hawaiian hawk was flying overhead, because they would stop their clucking and stare at the sky and head for their safe zone. 😬

We watched this one being seen off by smaller birds… but I live where there are many of the great red kites and a lot of corvids. I see this a lot 🙂

Ohh, the corvids! Forgot you’ve got them! I really loved these birds when in Ireland a couple years back, in a way that I love ravens in the US. Scrappy and intelligent. But also connected, communicative, like guardians. I have not seen as many kites, though I like their mythology 😉 and really have to get my predator fix when I go to the mainland.

We only have the Hawaiian hawk and two species of owls. But they are lovely, and as rare as they are, I have to stop every time I see one. For there always seems to be a message. There was a time right at dusk when a Pueo (owl) flew right to a window screen and hooked it claws into it and flapped enough to stay stare straight at my husband, who definitely appreciated the gesture and the message. Then it flew off. Amazing, amazing world.

Lucky you, lucky us. We are so blessed! 😘
