Photo prompt round-up – Cave #writephoto

The photograph for this week’s prompt was taken at Odin’s Cave above Castleton in Derbyshire. Once part of an ancient lead mine also named for the Norse god, it is thought to have been mined since Roman times. Now it is part of a protected area and home to many plants and wildflowers that tolerate the particular soil conditions of the spoil heaps.

There have been some outstanding contributions for this week’s photo prompt! Some posts have been reblogged, but please click on the links below to visit all the posts and leave a comment for the author! A new prompt will be published later today…come and join in!

Justice

It is dark. Lightning crackles overhead; this is no place to be caught in the storm. His pursuers are too close now. A flash illuminates the entrance to the cave. It looks like some ancient helmet with shadowed eyes, reached by a path of broken teeth. ‘A bit fanciful.’ He grins at his own imagination but cannot unsee the high cheekbones of the face that seems to watch from behind the trees.

A final few yards over the strewn boulders, he crawls to shelter as the heavens open and the light dies. ‘Swallowed by a giant.’ Quiet laughter echoes in the darkness. He drops the knife. Rivulets of rain creep across the earth to wash her blood from the blade. He can hear them outside, cursing the storm. They would never find him here. He’d forgotten the old mine.

It is dark. Thunder crashes and groans, drowning the distant voices. It is too dark to see the cave mouth against the gloom. Too dark to see the walls close in and the roof slowly descend. Stone cracks as the giant smiles.

No, they would never find him here.
