Not one that most of us in the West would be happy with these days… there are no mobile phones, no internet, no conveniences… but even so, this tribe may be richer than we are in many ways.

THERE AREN’T MANY “LOST” tribes any more — the realities of the modern world means that most formerly nomadic people have settled down into cities, and that virtually everyone, for good or for bad, has been brought into the global fold. The Dukha tribe is one of the rare exceptions. The Dukha are a Tuvan-Turkic tribe that lives on the border of Mongolia and Russia, and they are best known as reindeer herders. The photographs are amazing. They do have a harsh life… but maybe we could still learn something from their attitude to the earth.

Undoubtedly we could. I loved the photo of the child asleep snuggled up beside a reindeer. A friend and I had just been having a conversation about how our society is becoming increasingly risk-averse and I could imagine the shrieks of horror from the health & safety brigade if they saw that photo.

Incredible! I am humbled by these people, and completely captivated by the fact they ride reindeer and hunt with wolves and eagles. Its the stuff of fantasy! I can’t help wondering if once more ancient people’s were like this. The photographer did an amazing job. Thanks for sharing this article, as I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise. 😊
