The soggy hobbit

wedding 102

Yep. I’m going to have to share 🙂

Today I watched through tears as my son and his little Faith were married. Faith looked beautiful, something said about all brides, of course. But in this case it was simply true. She was stunning.

It was not your conventional big wedding with all the trimmings, but then, this is no ordinary couple. It was a small, intimate ceremony and absolutely right. And we had perfect weather.

Yet for all there were apparently just a very few of us there, the room was full to overflowing. Over the past four years so many people have given their loving support to my son, myself and my family, that I carried a whole host of them in my heart today.

I could not help looking back at where we have journeyed to come to this day… where this young couple can now stand on the threshold of a future full of possibilities.

I could not help remembering, and with those memories, the deep and abiding gratitude wells up for all the love, friendship and kindness we have been blessed with. So my heart carried with me every one of you who has been there with us along the road.

You were all there.

It is true that mothers generally shed a tear or two at weddings. But if you know anything of their story, you will understand the handbag full of damp tissues and the rather soggy hobbit who, standing with her younger son, watched the elder stand to speak his vows to the beautiful young woman about to become his wife. You will know why watching him sign his name in the register set me off again. The day was like that.

We were early for lunch, so sat in a pavement cafe in our wedding finery before heading to a wonderful Chinese restaurant and a lovely meal shared before the cake was cut.

Then back to Nick and Faith’s home where I watched him dance (well, sort of, very sort of…) with his wife in their garden .. and where, with much laughter, I danced with my son at his wedding. Yep. That’s done it, I’m off again…. pass the tissues….

Nick’s story has a happy ending… except it is not really the ending of his story.. but the beginning of theirs.
