One
People
Facing fear
A common goal
And an unseen foe
Threatening all nations
Victims, not marauders, masked
Closing borders, erecting screens
The irony of barricades built
To separate those who stand together
When the enemy makes no distinction
We distinguish ourselves by choices
Humankind stands at the crossroads
A new hope waits in the ashes
A point of choice and change
Demolishing walls
Not building them
Seeing peace
Living
True

For the first time in human history, we knowingly stand as one against a common threat. Previous pandemics and natural disasters may well have affected the entire planet, but until the advent of instantaneous communication, we would not have known what the other side of the globe was going through until long after the event.
It strikes me as tragic that, when humankind has, for once, the chance to act together to face something that affects us all, regardless of race, religion, social status or any of the other artificial barriers we have erected between ourselves in the past… we still cling to the divisions that have fractured the human family for millennia.
There is a dreadful irony too in the fact that we are externalising these barriers, in the form of plexiglass shields, masked faces and gloved hands… and that we have found a bizarre equality in being afraid of human contact, regardless of the barriers of prejudice.
I would like to think we could learn something other than fear from this global challenge.
Double etheree for Colleen’s poetry challenge.
This is brilliant Sue. Love to you.

This is not only a work of art Sue it is a lesson, we are a strange spieces. Fear drives us so much, fear of death, fear of loss, fear of losing what we have, fear of losing status. It all becomes pointless, all social status wiped away by an invisible, common enemy. I hope we can all open our eyes and learn, I fear we will not. Be safe Sue. 💜

I am an optimist, but that doesn’t mean I can’t see the realities. I hope… but have to admit the unlikelihood. ❤

Yes it’s very sad state of affairs, we will have to wait and see…….. But not hold our breath.💜💜

Excellent, Sue, both the poem and your words afterwards. Although I’d like to think humanity might have learned something from this, I fear nothing will change. I was reading something someone else had written and she ended it by remembering the Beatles and All We Need is Love. It me think that no matter how much we – the little people – love each other, our leaders don’t actually love us.

I can never think of politics without thinking of Douglas Adams:
“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

“We distinguish ourselves by choices” A profound line and eternally true, Sue. I hope that we learn something valuable from this global threat and that we are better people coming out of it than we were going in. It feels touch and go right now.

I live in hope, Diana… but I havemy doubts. Collectively, we are not very good at learning from our own mistakes.

I hope we will too. Sadly, our present government is still doing it’s best to divide us. I hope enough people can see through it to work together for something better. (K)

That seems to be the case across the globe, one way or the other. But we can hope common sense prevails at ground level.

Well done, Sue. You would think that all the leaders would put aside, well, everything, and just work together.

One can only hope for lasting change, but can humanity do it? Only time will tell.

I have no doubt there will be change. We can only hope it is positive.

A wonderful Etheree, but i agree to Willow. In my opinion too, most of us will not learn their lessons. Have a look back to the issues getting masks and ventilators. Every state does it on their own. Nearly no cooperation, and in view of the Spanish Flu we are in the middle of the first of maybe three horrible waves. But the hope will never die. Michael

I would hope we’d learn, but I doubt we will, and many of our current leaders are more interested in making us more divided.

As long as we are able to change, even a little bit, to adapt to this and other crises, there is always hope.
