Apology

It has come to my notice that none of my replies to comments on the blog have been published for the past few days.

I have answered all comments. But the replies are not showing.

Apparently, replies show if I answer from the post directly, but not from the notifications bar that I usually use… so most are simply not there.

WordPress is looking into this, but so far have found no answer but for me to change to a newer theme, which I am reluctant to do, having neither the desire, time nor the ruddy energy at the moment to tackle such a move, with the best part of fifteen thousand posts to move. Quite apart from the fact that I happen to like my blog the way it is.

I hope this can be resolved, but repeat my apologies to anyone who feels I have ignored their comments.

  4. As far as I know, if you change theme, all your posts and pages are automatically changed to suit, Sue. (You can preview how new themes look before changing) 🤗❤️🤗

Thanks, Chris… but you lose all the bits the new theme doesn’t support and have to re-do them, somewhere and somehow. Like all the book widgets…
And I’ll be damned if they are forcing me to use the new editor before I’m ready 😉 x

Sue – are your book widgets capability part of the ‘theme’ you use? there are some tools available via plugins that allow you to make ‘widgets’ that will transcend themes – if done right and only need tweaking to properly layout – but then, not sure which WordPress.com theme you’re on, or what theme you’re using and whether or not you might have time to investigate the ‘things bundled with theme’ that need to be separate so you can update theme whenever you like – :). Email me if I can be of any service at all –

  6. It’s happening to me too Sue. I’m not on the new editor (have reverted back to classic twice) but it’s also some of the comments made on my posts that are absent as well as my replies.

I can only post comments direct from a post at the moment, and with comments coming in every day on posts sometimes years old, that is a pain. I know your theme is similar, if not the same as mine, Di. It would be worth letting the Happiness Engineers know. Apparently, while the older themes are still available to use, they are not necessarily supported after a while. We will probably have more of these problems and be forced to change theme to avoid them. But just at the moment, I think we have enough on our plates.

🙂 Sue, glitches do take place on WordPress blogs; so there is no need for you to apologize.

In my case, I am not getting notified whenever someone comments on my blog posts (That only started today. So, I will wait a while to see if the problem persists and if it does, I will bring it to the attention of the Happiness Engineers).

Do enjoy the rest of your day!

  11. The comment issues….oh my. My problem is the comments are NOT showing up in the notification bar. Just my email and the blog itself. So the ‘convenience’ of having comments in one place is not so convenient. I hope they resolve your issue soon Sue.

  15. I’ve had that problem intermittently for months. It comes, then it goes and I figure they finally got it fixed. They didn’t. It has popped up over and over again for the past 8 years and they never know what’s causing it. I say “bad software.”

It is usually missing notifications on mine… but this has really annoyed me. I don’t spend my time writing replies, trying to politely acknowledge comments and hold conversations, on a blog I pay for, just for a software glitch to decide not to display said comments, paint me as impolite… and then have them tell me I should waste even more time redesigning my blog to solve their problem!

It’s being pressurised to make a theme change to solve a problem they have created by tinkering/updating!! You have enough on your plate right now. I have been having the same issues and the term ‘Happiness engineers’ is a misnomer. ❤ flowing to you, Sue. Much ❤

Yes, I noticed that too. What is wrong with us staying with old themes that we are comfortable with? I strongly dislike being dictated to. I’ve played ball and switched to the new editor, so me thinks this is not a level playing field. It’s not just WP that is doing this and as more people shift to working from home, the pressure will mount on the software companies to raise their standards and remember who they are serving.

  19. I changed my blog theme last weekend, Sue. It took me about an hour to do, although much of that was spent deciding which theme to choose. The reason why I changed theme is that I had a few problems with my blog. Nothing serious, (like the problem you’ve had) but when I contacted the Happiness Engineers about the issues, they informed me that the theme I was using had been retired and was no longer being supported.

As you can imagine, I wasn’t best pleased to be told that the theme had been retired and asked why they hadn’t contacted all users who use that theme to inform them that it was being withdrawn. They couldn’t give me a reason, other than they’re bringing out new themes all the time, so have to retire some of the older themes that have a smaller uptake.

As Chris mentioned in his reply, all my blog posts and pages were automatically transferred over when I change theme. Plus, so were my widgets and everything else on my blog. After changing the theme, I decided then was as good a time to do some general housekeeping of the blog (like updating my ‘about Hugh’ page and my ‘my books’ page. This threw up some broken links and even one link that went to another blog that displayed a message declaring that it had been removed due to violation of terms and policies.

I spent about an hour on the housekeeping, and all the problems I was having with my blog are now resolved.

Of course, it’s up to you whether you want to change themes or not, but I just wanted to inform you of how changing theme worked for me. Now I just need to hope that they don’t retire the new theme I’ve chosen.

I hope they’re able to sort the comments problem out for you.

I’ve got a new post coming out today regarding what I found out about themes being retired, just so as to warn other users.

Hope you and Ani are both well?

Thanks, Hugh, I know it is supposed to be a straightforward switch, but I do not like being forced to change something I am perfectly happy with because someone else has screwed something up without mentioning it. Particularly when I pay for the blog… and especially right now, when I am not only working seven days a week, but working twice as long, being the only contact Nick has with the outside world…and as he is unable to get any delivery slots for his shopping.

      • I fully understand, Sue. I just wanted to let you know what happened when I found out that my blog theme had been retired.

With regards comments, have you tried going through the old method of accessing comments via the WP Admin button on the dashboard of your blog? I still use this old method of responding to all comments. Not only are they all in one place, but I’ve never encountered any problems with this method (unlike I have with the notifications bell icon). It’s just a thought I had after leaving my original comment.
