Doughnuts #YorkshireDay

In honour of Yorkshire Day…

I shall tell thee a tale o’ when I were a lass
And came nobbut as ‘igh as tha knee
When t’owd Yorkist Range were black-leaded and ‘ot
And Great Granny were baking fer tea.

“Can I bake with you, Granny?” I asked smiling up,
“Nay lass, I’m in ‘urry, tha’ knaws…
‘Cause when I’m done ‘ere I mun polish yon floor,
Polish t’brasses and launder me drawers.”

“What y’ making?” I asked looking wistfully on
As the yeast started working in t’dough,
“Doughnuts,” she said and I felt a bit peeved
’Cause I desp’rately wanted a go.

“Go see thee Grandad, he’s out there in t’yard,
‘Cause there’s not enough space for thee ‘ere.”
So I went feeling glum to see what he were at
And if he’d ‘ad a flea in ‘is ear.

“What’s mithering thee, little bairn,” Grandad said,
“’As ta bin chucked out ‘ere just like me?
Come and laik out in t’garden , wi’ me, lass, instead,
And we can mek doughnuts … tha’ll see!”

So he plonked dahn a shovel o’ muck on the path,
And wi’water we mixed up the mud,
An’ then we made doughnuts, all covered in worms
A bit messy, but by they looked good.

“And what ‘as the pair of thee been laikin’ at?”
Said Great Granny, with ‘ands at her side,
“We’ve been makin’ doughnuts,” my Great Grandad said,
“Does t’a want one, lass?” “Nay, get inside!”

She muttered and mumbled while we washed our ‘ands
And then we ‘ad doughnuts and tea…
And from that day to this though it wasn’t ‘is name,
‘Grandad Doughnuts’ was ‘is name to me.
