There were years when the table groaned under the weight
Of the Christmas delights I had cooked.
With a house full of teenagers, everything went
With no delicacy overlooked.
This year I was cooking for me and the dog
With a son coming round as a guest,
So I did little shopping, stayed well in control,
Thinking minimalist would be best.
I hadn’t gone mad, I had spared the excess…
Kept it more like a good Sunday dinner…
(With a good Yorkshire tea, for the end of the day)
But I’m not feeling righteously thinner.
I have eaten the last of the home-made mince pies…
It’s a hard job, but someone must do it.
The turkey, with help from the small dog, has gone
As she happily ate her way through it.
The rich Christmas Log, made of chocolate and cream
Disappeared when I brought out the custard.
The last of the ham went in nice crusty bread
Thickly slathered with butter and mustard.
The pecans were lethal, I couldn’t resist,
Kept on munching once I’d got the taste…
But what can you do, when there is only you
And you won’t let good food go to waste?
“Oooh you’ve lost some weight,” I was told Christmas day
Which was nice, ’cause I’m not on a diet.
I wasn’t too sure it was accurate though,
But I thought I’d keep that idea quiet.
I’ve still got the Christmas cake left to consume
And a trifle, some cheese and the wine…
The groaning this year may well be from the scales
And the Christmas delight was all mine.
I wonder if calories can be used up
By a writer composing a ballad?
But one thing I know, to the small dog’s disgust,
I’ll be starting the new year on salad!
Thats a nice way to start New year… What about the rest of the days….? Lololol…. 😊😛

You could always send food home with the dinner guest if the small dog does not mind, It would mitigate the damage to the waist line.

not sure about the salad, still too cold for that in my opinion, but I may have to start ignoring the hunger pangs!

Oh Sue I think we’re all feeling the strain of Christmas excesses! As long as all was enjoyed though!

Yep, I’m there with you, Sue. Have you noticed how much faster the pounds go on nowadays – and how much slower they come off?

You are so not alone, Sue. My sugar intake is always the problem at the holidays. I bake, and I eat my stuff. But, it’s worth it…I wouldn’t have it any other way. Good luck with all that salad ! poor Ani ???

Seriously, Ani would never forgive me 😉 I seldom eat what I bake… but mince pies and Christmas cake… now that’s different 😉

Mrs Widds butter tarts, and mince tarts, and shortbread biscuits, and sugar cookies …. all gone, or in the freezer! 😀

You have a fun way to explain those after Christmas leftover results. I just moan and groan about having the lone responsibility of eating the leftovers. I certainly would hate to have the family know I threw them away after all that work! Just doing my duty.

Dogs totally don’t “get” salad. Poor Garry has also had to deal with consuming all the mince pie, but he has prevailed and there’s but a tiny bit of crust left. Just us two and the dawgz for New Year’s. And really, truly, that’s just FINE.

I’ve always loved cooking and baking for the holidays, but with my children grown and just the two of us, it’s not the same. No more sweets for me. Soup and salad time has arrived.

Arg, the pounds! I’m actually looking forward to the salads. And how is Ani? Any extra weight there or does she just run it off? Great poem, but it made me feel guilty!
