An older post, reblogged from James at Walking with a Smacked Pentax… do click through to see some his photographs of the stunning landscape of the Lake District.

Helvellyn mountain is one of the most beautiful in the English Lake District. At 950 metres (3,117 ft) above sea level, it is the third highest peak in both the Lake District and England. It is also noted for the famous ‘Striding Edge’ – a sharp ridge leading up to the mountain – slippery and dangerous, several have fallen off and plunged several hundred feet to their deaths.
It had been several years since I last ascended Helvellyn and I wanted to get up there again – so with several friends from work we decided to tackle it. Conditions were favourable but quite windy – in fact it was blowing quite hard on Striding Edge and several sections had to be traversed by at least one of us on our hands and knees, fearing quite literally, for our lives! But looking down to the floor several hundred feet below it was no wonder, one false step and it would be all over!
