She’s smelly.
And if you think I’m being a bit mean here, what with all the time she spends wallowing in hot, soapy water in the room-that-shall-not-be-mentioned, think again. I’m a dog. Smelly is good.
She goes places… sees people… where I can’t go. Which I am not happy about, and if you’d all get those feathered pests under control, maybe I could go more places. She does take me out a fair bit, of course, when I remind her, and always when she’s been off gallivanting. I think she feels guilty. I hope so anyway, ‘cause I always give her my best puppy eyes when she leaves!
So yesterday she comes in, snuggles down to give me the ‘good girl’ cuddle I always get. Well, usually. When I’ve been good…by her standards…Though I got lots of cuddles the other day when I hadn’t been good according to her! She even leaked a bit. I mean, I’d only taken myself for a walk… sort of saving her the trouble, you know. How was I to know she’d panic? Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked…
Where was I? Oh yes. She comes in and snuggles… well, she thinks I like it because its snuggly. What she doesn’t seem to realise is that I am finding out exactly what she’s been up to, where and who with. Both my boys, eh? And she didn’t take me??? And that funny, milky, two-legs-puppy smell. I so want to find out who that belongs to… She says I can though, soon…

And there were grassy smells on her feet, and dust and she smelled all foodie and happy. She told me she’d been out with a fan of mine. Ruddy cheek if you ask me! If she’s out with someone who knows me… why wasn’t I there too? She says I couldn’t, ‘cause they were in a food place first, but that he knew all about me and had my book… But I’m not that easily fooled. There had been grass n’ stuff too.
Ah yes, she said, but that was a church. They don’t let dogs in churches. ‘Cept for really special services to bless the animals…
Now, whoah… don’t let dogs in churches???
Let me get this straight… “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind…and He saw that it was good…” But not good enough ’pparently! And we need blessing? Now that’s a bit odd, you know. Dogs, on the whole, don’t go around eating forbidden fruit. Ham, cheese, biscuits… but not so much fruit. Except bananas. So I don’t think it was dogs that got kicked out of paradise somehow…So my question is, why can’t we go in your churches? And, why do we need to be blessed? We already are! We get the whole unconditional love thing, it is part of our nature… which is more that can be said of some two-legses…
Seems a bit hippopot Hippopotam…. unfair.
You really are a funny lot, you know. I’ve no idea what would become of you without us to look after you…
Much love,
Ani xxx

Nice to get YOUR side of the story, Ani. And your side does sound perfectly rational. Frankly, I think having a dog or two in church would make it so much more fun, especially when those sermons drag on. Hugs and pets!

Don’t go in the churches Ani. I went in there once and heard the humans singing. Had to cover my ears, just like they do when I sing!
Lots of barks and waggly tails from me on the South Coast

Hi Ani, you have to be nice and clean to go to church anyway, so that means having to have a BATH!!! You are best off staying at home and sitting on the lovely new chair whilst she is out of the way!

Dear Ani,
I think the humans have got it wrong. Churches are wonderful things for humans because sometimes they freak out if they realize how close to God they really are everywhere in the world. It gives humans something to do to think they have control over Him. As if they weren’t the created and parts of the Creator in the first place. So enjoy just being everywhere you are and keep working on your human to help you connect with the other humans and the wild and tame places they love. Church isn’t something a dog NEEDS or ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH FOR.
Now mind you, I DO recall my human saying something about a place she went that she called .. let’s see if I can remember it correctly :”StLukesChurchButItReallyWasATempleOfBastInDisguise” — something to do with their resident feline Toby…funny thing was, when Toby left, she quit going. Said it just wasn’t the same and the new person who ran the place didn’t like cats.
Much love (from the safe distance of My Human’s home),Elfstone Chestnut Pussycat.

Hi Elfstone,
Ah, I see… they’re not places to go to get close to It… they are places where they can pretend they are seperate and have to go a long way to get home. Daft things.
Mind… if there are cats in churches… that sounds interesting…
You’re safe though. Your two legses brought me tennis balls 😀

Dear Ani,
Toby taught my departed elders, Socks and Chloe, how to write. (“Blog” was not a concept back then but we had things called “Newsletters” — in fact, I am told in our feline /human oral tradition that Chloe helped write My Human’s newsletters and even participated in pasteup (getting rubber cement in his fur — yes, Chloe was a boy kitty; that is another long story), and layout (by laying out on the papers My Human was trying to put together.) Toby hung out in the priest’s study and helped with HIS newsletters. He also would come visit services, comfort little kids, and walk on the organ pedals when the organist wasn’t looking.
Love and cat hair,
Elfstone
