A detailed and exceedingly useful post from Hugh on the aternative to the ‘reblog’ button which, although common to most wordpress.com sites, does not appear on self hosted sites or general articles across the web.
I first came across the Press This marklet thanks to D.G. Kaye’s excellent article and it solved my biggest problems with reblogs… how do you reblog when there is no reblog button…and how to schedule a reblog for a future date.

I stopped reblogging blog posts months ago. In fact, I wish I’d never started using the reblog button. Why? Because of the fantastic little feature WordPress call ‘Press This’. But, what is ‘Press This’, where can you find it, and how do you use it?
‘Press This’ is an alternative way to reblogging. It’s like reblogging a post, but you can do so much more with it than you can when using the reblog button. It does take a little more time to set up, but that’s because it’s more than just about pressing a button and then moving on. For quickness, reblogging a post is perfect. However, if like me you have made the most out of reblogging (click here to read the post) then you can easily make up the extra time it takes in setting up a ‘Press This’ share.
The ‘Press This’ button can be found amongst the sharing buttons at the bottom of a published post and is easy to spot. Here’s where it appears on my blog.
I’ll now go through a step-by-step guide on how to use it.
- First, find a blog post you want to share. It can be one of your own blog posts or a blog post that has been written by another blogger.
- Click on the ‘Press This’ sharing button, and a new window will open (like the one below).

I recently wrote about this subject. About 9 months ago I introduced a new category to my site called “Web Explored” it was a way I could tell my readers about the thoughts of other people. What I do is create a post that is a random collection of things other writers talk about. I may quote a sentence or two, no more. Doing this I am able to inform my readers without negatively impacting another blogger’s SEO by copying a large chunk of their text.
I have removed the reblog button from my pages, to discourage this practice.
