Dear Santa,
Me and her are no longer on speaking terms. She’s really done it this time. This is serious stuff.
I may go into a decline.
It all started yesterday, when she stripped all the covers off my sofa. She does this every so often…and most often before we get visitors. Now normally, she hates that job. Let’s face it, the cushions are nearly as big as she is and she struggles a bit and says bad words. But this time, she was smiling. I was immediately suspicious…and gave her the eyebrow… the one that asks ‘what’s up?’ She was Up To Something, I could tell…
“Well,” she says, “it is the very last time I’ll be doing this…but I wouldn’t want it to go all doggy.”
That was a surprise! I couldn’t see her living with the muddy pawprints and eau de dog all winter. She has no appreciation of how hard I have to work to get a really good smell on the sofa. And it isn’t my fault if the garden is all muddy and squishy (though she may have a point about it not being digging weather). She just wrinkles her nose, sighs a lot and starts stripping the cushions every couple of weeks. Hang on a minute…’go’ where?
The she dropped the bombshell…
“The sofa is going.” What? Say that again… “We’re getting a nice new one.”
She’s stealing my sofa?
“Whose sofa?”
Mine. Definitely mine. possession is nine-tenths of the law, so they say… and she hardly ever sits on it…
“Okay, point taken, but it has to go.”
Look, who bought a cream sofa with a black dog? Is it my fault the pawprints show? Or that I moult (yeah, she moans about that too…). And I’m a dog… we are supposed to smell of dog you know….
“The new one is leather. Smells better than you.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. It was a joke, no way she could manage a leather sofa. Especially not in December!
“Ever heard of Freecycle?”
No..? She explained. It was no joke. So, when will this horror be arriving?
“It’ll be here on Monday,” she says, “And I can wipe it clean every day,” she says with an evil grin on her face. “Once I’ve recoloured the leather and fixed the fading it will be lovely. And the cushions won’t come off either!”
What? I need those cushions! I burrow under them to make my den! It’s good exercise for her bending down to pick them up a dozen times a day. Keeps her bendy.
I was so upset I didn’t even realise I’d disembowelled one of the little scatter cushions…
“Stuffing? Oh Ani…”
Okay, I know. Sorry.
She tried to get round me then by scritching my ears. Then explained that change is not always a bad thing. That may be true, but I am having a hard time seeing anything good in this one. Though I suppose it will make her happy. Which is okay. Sort of.
So, if you need me for anything between now and the fatal day, I’ll be under my sofa cushions. Whimpering. Quietly. Piteously. She needn’t think she can feel good about this.
And if she writes to you with a Christmas list and you have to decide whether she’s been naughty or nice…
…well, you can make your own mind up.
Much love,
Ani.

I reckon Ani will get used to the change and even enjoy it given a little time. There may not be normal cushions to his under but a few scatter cushions might take care of that. The less it smells, the less messing we longlegs will have to do.

Scatter cushions are a sore point after Ani’s inadvertent destruction. She was only shaking it, but stuffing goes everywhere. xxx

Gibbs and Bonnie commiserate. They also have a sofa. Bonnie has her crate with her own stuff in it which we only take out and wash when we can’t stand it one more day … and then, Bonnie fixes it to her specifications. I hope leather works out for everyone. I have not had good luck with it and pets.

That’s why I’ve gone the economical route. I’ll see how it works. Either way, the cream sofa with mud ten feet away had to go.

I am sorry Ani, I hope the leather works, it would take my guys about a week to turn it into rawhide strips.

Ani, You are a Darling. Sue that was a cute post. I know, dogs just love to sit on Sofas, more than we do. Poor Ani, now she’ll have to do with the Leather Smell instead of her sweet Doggie Smell.

oh dear Ani, I sympathize. I been through this earlier this year. They got rid of the wonderful smelly old leather couch and got a new one from their friend who was getting a new one. Only she had a dog and it took ages for me to get my smell on the new one then they goes and washes it again. much paw love Dante dog. x

What is it with their washing stuff? They never seem to stop… and she can’t blame me for the curtains. Well, apart from the muddy bits at the bottom… 😉 xxx

All part of the fun and games of having a four legged pal. But it does sound like a sensible idea…

Leather is very practical, and lovely to sit on in the summer. But be prepared for a shock when the temperature drops though, its like sitting on an ice cube…

I seldom get to sit on the sofa anyway 🙂

My three furry friends will have a shock in January when our new sofa arrives and they will NOT be allowed up on it; new sofa, new rules…OK, maybe I’ll be soft and purchase a huge, thick dog (sofa safe) dog blanket. Enjoy your last few days with your sofa Ani!

Ani, take heart. Some leather things pick up and hold smells quite well. It is slow, but you may be able to get the new couch well enough Ani smelled for you to know it is yours with your wonderful nose, even if she can’t tell with her puny human nose. And it will have cushions to burrow under. And if she gets to make muddy paw prints disappear, she will be a happy two legged.

I hope you are right, Bob. She does have lots of cushions though… and a big blanket for me… so maybe it won’t be too bad…

You friends in NH agree that is just cruel too, and they feel you should be able to keep the old sofa, which will now be JUST yours. She can have her leather. 🙂

It has always been almost just hers, Alethea 🙂 Apart from the odd cuddle, I seldom sit on it. Sadly there is no space at all here… even one sofa takes up half the room.

Poor Ani You’v had so many changes this year, and born them all with good will. But I can see the side of your two legged – you make her so much work! You’re a scamp, clearly. Here’s hoping you can give her a nice Christmas present by being OK with the leather sofa, and maybe she’ll let you have some pillows to snuggle under. Just don’t disembowel them! Hugs.

Oh no Ani. I can understand what you are going through. My human took all the covers off of our sofa and washed them all last week. Now she gets grumpy if I sit on it when I have just been out playing!
I hope the new one yours gets isn’t as bad as you dreaded! Love Roxy xx 🐾🐾🐾

Sorry to hear about your sofa Ani, humans are like that, is there any possibility it would fit in YOUR bedroom? At least make sure Sue buys you a warm rug for the leather couch, leather is often cold on a dogs nose and feet and also slippery when you stretch. Better still a double rug and soft pillow.
