gathered there to fight a war; “we shall win,” edwin swore

so all feasted the night before; but amice and edwin did much more

when amice saw her lover fell; she cried out a primeval yell

like a she wolf from hell; not men her birth-right to sell

by his corpse, she did kneel; then took up her lover’s shield

ran toward bloody battlefield; his army would not yield

from dead hand, sword she pried; “on men, forward,” she cried

her skirts blood red were dyed; she twas mad and wild eyed

unafeared enemy did grin; twould be a routing, easy win

til their dying did begin; in own’s blood did slip and swim

mid this field of gore;
