The great Shepherds’ Pie Triumph

User avatar

I had shepherds’ pie for my breakfast…

It isn’t as bad as it seems…

After nearly a week of not eating a thing

A good meal was the stuff of my dreams.

*

A mouthful of toast had been madness…

A yoghurt as good as it got…

After turning my stomach with every delight

I would rather go hungry than not.

*

It is not like I didn’t give it my best shot

I had cooked and attempted to chew it,

And although I could probably lose the odd pound*

This was not the best way I could do it.

*

I’d stocked up the fridge, there was good stuff to eat

But here all I was doing was picking…

The fish ate their way through the nice crispy veg

While the dog ate her way through the chicken.

*

I had just about given up trying to eat,

And was sticking to milk and cornflakes,

When my poor abused stomach asserted itself

With a rumble and started to ache.

*

“You could make shepherds’ pie with the stuff in the fridge.”

I had made it and stored it in hope…

Expecting the small dog would gobble that too

Long before my digestion could cope.

*

So I dove for the fridge, switched the oven up high…

I would take my digestion by storm!

And I hoped all the while that the hunger would last

While the pie in the oven got warm.

*

So I had shepherds’ pie for my breakfast.

And the small dog had shepherds’ pie too.

‘Cause I only ate half, and yet feel like a whale

Who’s uncomfortably beached from the Blue.

*

But its progress of sorts, and a triumph!

A real, proper, savoury meal,

After days eating less than a dieting mouse

Eating that much was quite a big deal.

*

So the moral… there always must be one,

Or why would a story be told?

Is sometimes the body knows best what it needs…

So don’t let its breakfast go cold.

*

* Look, it’s poetry… “more than the odd pound…” wouldn’t scan….

I hope you enjoyed every mouthful.
I’m sure ‘More than the odd pound’ was excessive anyway so what did scan was perfect.

Sue has been off colour this week and not able to eat very much.. but glory be she fancied Shepherd’s Pie for breakfast.. for those who are not familiar with Shepherd’s Pie.. no Shepherds were injured in the making.. but Ani did also benefit… a little verse to whet your appetite this morning.

A very cute poem!! Get better soon. My hubby loves shepherd’s pie and I make it for him as a treat. Being vegetarian I don´t eat it but have made a vege version a couple of times which was very good. Would that be a shepherdless pie??
